Recap / Yu Gi Oh Anime S 1 E 46 Dungeon Dice Monsters 1

Go To

A new gaming shop, the Black Clown, has come to Domino, making Solomon Muto jealous. Its proprietor is a handsome young man named Duke Devlin, who's selling a game he invented himself. It's similar, but different, to Duel Monsters, and is called Dungeon Dice Monsters. Joey challenges him to a duel in the hopes of winning away his ladies (and to make the shop close), but Duke defeats him. As punishment, Joey must be his slave for a week.

After several humiliations, including being forced to wear a dog suit, Joey's had about all he can take—and so has Yugi. Yami Yugi challenges Duke to a Dungeon Dice Monsters match to free Joey. Duke agrees, but adds that if he wins, Yugi must never play Duel Monsters again, giving up his title of "King of Games" to Duke.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Beat Them at Their Own Game: Joey used Mad Sword Beast's piercing effect against Duke. Duke later returns the favor with Fairy Meteor Crush by having Joey remember just what his monster did first.
  • The Casanova: Duke has every girl in town swooning over him.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Instead of explaining what Fairy Meteor Crush does, Duke asks Joey to remember what Mad Sword Beast did. Joey mulls over it for a while...and remembers that it does piercing damage and Goblin Attack Force is 1) not only defense mode but 2) has 0 defense points!
  • Hope Spot: Near the end of the duel, it look like Joey's gonna win — until Duke uses a Gradius + Limiter Removal + Fairy Meteor Crush combo to destroy Joey's Goblin Attack Force (in defense mode and with 0 defense points) and the rest of his Life Points.
  • Humiliation Conga: Duke forces Joey through this.
  • "I Can't Look!" Gesture: Joey is too confident in his ability to beat Duke. It actually gets so bad that Yugi can't even watch after Joey ignores any warning that Duke is better than he lets on.
  • Merchandise-Driven: Duke and Joey use cards from real-life booster packs that had just come out around the time the episodes were made.
  • Pragmatic Adaptation: The manga version of the story has Duke and Joey play games of dice and playing cards. To make it more about duel monsters, the anime replaces this games with a booster draft instead.
