- Aesop Amnesia: Mary tries to explain to Goergie the problems that can come from lying and sneaking around your parents when she explains how she was a Former Teen Rebel and got pregnant with him out of wed-lock. Though Georgie later shows in Season 5 to have not learned his lesson from this conversation, when he eventually finds himself in a similar situation as his mom due to lying.
- Call-Forward: Sheldon arrives at CalTech. As he leaves, the camera pans to the room he was admiring: the cafeteria. It's the cafeteria in The Big Bang Theory where Sheldon and his future friends would eat lunch together.
- Determinator: Sheldon goes to great lengths to secure his plane trip to Pasadena to meet Stephen Hawking, and ultimately succeeds and talks his dad into coming with him when he convinces outsiders to finance the trip.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Missy gets jealous of Sheldon that he and George get to go to Pasadena, California but she has to stay home.
- Kick the Dog: Missy does this to Sheldon after he laments about not being able to secure a trip to Pasadena.
- Landline Eavesdropping: Mary accidentally overhears Georgie's conversation with his girlfriend over the phone and how he plans to come over while she is home alone, and lies to his mom so she will let him go. When Mary reveals she knows he lied and grounds him for it, it causes a rift between them.
- Like Mother, Like Daughter: As while Missy envies Sheldon for securing a plane flight to Pasadena, Mary herself envies George that Sheldon picked him to go with him there. Mary was looking forward to the trip to take some time away from mothering her rebellious teenage son Georgie.
- Never My Fault: Georgie holds a grudge against Mary for (accidentally) eavesdropping on him while he was on the phone and not letting him go to his girlfriend's house, ignoring that he tried to lie to her to go and that is the reason she grounded him.
