- A Fate Worse Than Death: Victor is furious at his father for bringing him back because now that he has become a cyborg, he can't play football anymore and cannot enroll to the college of his choosing to have a future.

- Calling the Old Man Out: Before the accident, Victor angrily chews out his dad for being so wrapped up in his work that he didn’t show up to the game, yet agin.
- Gorn: We get to see Victor's state right after the accident that made him Cyborg. It isn't pretty.
- Hypocritical Humor: Brion warns Violet to be careful about boys, as they only have "one thing" on their mind, even though he's only saying this out of jealousy because he has a crush on her.
- I Am a Monster: Victor views himself as a freak after being turned into a cyborg.
- Insult of Endearment: When Violet and Fred wonder if the two of them are freaks to the other students, Harper Row calls out to them, saying that yes, they are freaks, but that is way better than conforming to any of the cliques in the school. This is quickly followed by her eating with the two of them and befriending them.
- Literal-Minded: When Forager is told that his human identity is "Fred Bugg, with two G's" he takes it to mean his full name includes the spelling clarification. Harper sets him straight, though he insists on calling himself by his full name.
- More than Mind Control: While the Father Box made him kill, Victor admits to his father that his hatred towards him was his own.
- No OSHA Compliance: The explosion that wounded Victor was caused by an alien device's power cable getting snagged on a door and yanked loose. A security guard gets it snagged first, but Victor's furious exit from the lab winds up tearing it out.
- Who's on First?: After Violet introduces herself to her new friend, she says, "Harper." The fact that her first name is the same as Violet's last leads to some brief confusion.
