Episode 8: Satisfaction

Takes place on March 21

At Royal Memorial Hospital, the Roy Harpers and Oliver Queen discuss changes that have taken place since the original Roy was captured. The original Roy mentions his last memory of a botched mission investigating LexCorp. Oliver and the Roy clone fill in the blanks about what happen to Roy after he was captured and how he was replaced. The original Roy, while accepting of his clone's innocence in the whole thing and appreciating that he saved him, berates Oliver for his failures as a mentor. Oliver leaves the hospital room and seeks solace in the chapel, wondering if he's cursed. The Roy clone speaks to him about Artemis, Red Arrow and Speedy, convincing him that he is a good man and that the original Roy still needs him. Returning to the hospital room, they find Speedy has left through the window.

At Mount Justice, Mal, Superboy and Nightwing are updated on the Atlantean search for Lagoon Boy, the former two swearing vengeance on Aqualad. Below in the grotto, a memorial has been set up for fallen heroes which some of the team reflects on. Jaime laments the fact that unlike almost everyone else on the team he has no mentor, as the previous Blue Beetle passed away in the same explosion that propelled the Scarab into Jaime's life, while Impulse assures him that they might have more in common than it seems.

At Gotham Graveyard, Wally West assists Paula Brooks as she grieves over daughter Artemis' grave site. On a nearby hill overlooking them, Sportsmaster and Cheshire make plans for avenging Artemis. While Cheshire's plans are to make penance for not protecting her sister by killing Aqualad, Sportsmaster is only concerned with power plays within The Light and wants a reckoning with Black Manta.

The original Roy locates one of Green Arrow's safe-houses. Breaking in, he takes weapons and equipment, before using a zeta to travel to Metropolis. Red Arrow and Green Arrow speculate that Speedy will attempts to get revenge on Lex Luthor.

In Ivy Town, Wendy wishes Conner a happy birthday. The two share a moment on a park bench.

In Dakota City, several female heroes in civvies attend Raquel's bridal shower, though the celebration's mood is slightly ruined by the remembrance of Artemis's death. On the roof tops overlooking the party, Captain Cold is secretly casing a bank for a robbery, not realizing how close he is to several members of the League and the Team.

Lex Luthor and Mercy survive Speedy's initial assassination attempt. After retrieving a suitcase, they try to flee through an underground parking garage. Speedy and Mercy engage in close quarter combat.

Captain Cold makes his move, but the bank heist is cut short when he is charged by a group of female heroes, decked out in full regalia thanks to a quick incantation by Zatanna. A very big Oh, Crap! moment ensues.

Speedy eventually is able to disable Mercy, but armed security guards stop him before he can get his revenge on Lex Luthor. Lex points out that Speedy could kill him, but only at the cost of his own life. Lex offers him a suitcase and asks what he really wants: revenge or satisfaction?

Green Arrow and Red Arrow finally catch up to the original Roy who, by sparing Luthor for the moment, reveals the contents of the suitcase to be a prosthetic arm claimed to be supposedly superior to even Mercy's. The original Roy now goes by the codename Arsenal.

Notes:

  • The 4 monuments to fallen heroes shown in the grotto are: Ted Kord, Artemis, Jason Todd (the second Robin), and Aquagirl.

Tropes:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking:
Speedy: "While I was on ice, you found another Roy Harper, the sidekicks formed their own team, aliens invaded the Earth, and Ollie grew that dopey goatee?"
  • Artistic License – Biology: Arsenal is able to get into one of Red Arrow's safe-houses that has a retinal scanner. In real life, an artificial clone would not have the same retinal patterns as the person they were cloned from, just as natural identical twins don't (since, apart from how they came about, clones and identical siblings are actually the same thing). Possibly justified by Cadmus using some super-scientific process to make it that way, as otherwise a retinal scan could expose the clone. Presumably the same is true for their fingerprints.
  • Double-Meaning Title: The episode title refers to Roy's desire for revenge against Luthor, hoping for satisfaction after having eight years of his life stolen from him. It also refers to Luthor offering him a new weapon, believing that Roy actually wants the satisfaction of being useful again.
  • Easily Forgiven: The original Roy forgives his clone for replacing him since the latter didn't ask to be created and was the one to ultimately rescue him. The same can't be said for Oliver, whom Roy expresses No Sympathy for in taking too long to realize he'd been replaced and giving up on finding him.
  • Irony: Roy's clone, the person who was created to replace him, did more to find the original Roy than anyone else did. This does not soothe Roy's anger at Oliver.
  • Pen-Pushing President:
Luthor: "Oh, who knew enabling an alien invasion would entail so much paperwork."
  • That Man Is Dead: Following his encounter with Luthor, Roy abandons his "Speedy" moniker with a new one: Arsenal.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: When the heroines transform into full costume, Captain Cold realizes out loud that he's "completely doomed".
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Roy delivers his to Oliver for his failure to find him or recognize the Roy clone.
Roy: Seems to me the clone didn't do anything wrong. He didn't ask to be created. Plus, he found me. I can't blame him for this. But I can totally blame you!
    Oliver: Roy, I—!
Roy: We were partners! Friends! How could you not know I had been replaced? How could you leave me in Luthor's hands for eight years!? And how did I not see how useless you are? Get out... GET OUT!!!
