Episode 6: Infiltrator

Takes place on August 7 - 9

A criminal organization called The League of Shadows kidnaps a scientist and forces her to create a weapon for them, a cloud of nanites that not only consumes matter, but can also steal data from computer systems. Speedy, now calling himself Red Arrow, rescues her but not before they get the weapon.

Red Arrow goes to The Team to ask for help in keeping the inventor safe from The League while she finishes creating a computer virus that can nullify the cloud. He finds out that Green Arrow now has a new sidekick, his niece Artemis, who has just joined the team, and he is not pleased. Her attitude rubs the team wrong as well.

The League sends the assassin Cheshire and two other villains (Black Spider and Hook) to kill the scientist, and the team fails to stop her, but she spares her target once she finds out that the virus has already been finished. Artemis almost captures Cheshire, but then lets her go when she threatens to reveal some facts about Artemis' past to the team.

In the end, Red Arrow tells Artemis that he knows she's not really Green Arrow's niece (probably because GA raised him), but he won't tell the others, unless she does something to hurt his friends.

Also, The League is seen to work for The Light, and they state that they now have an agent inside the team.

Notes:

  • In the comics, Cheshire seduced Speedy and had a daughter with him, whom he raised on his own (until she was killed off for shock value.)

Tropes:

  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Kid Flash and Artemis spend much of the episode arguing, much to the displeasure of Aqualad and Dr Roquette.
  • Butt-Monkey: Kid Flash has to start school one day earlier than the rest of the team. As the others are having fun at the beach, he is shown enduring an unpleasant day.
    • Also his flirting with Miss Martian is heard by the team because they're still all telepathically connected.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Artemis is introduced making fun of Kid Flash when the latter arrives at the cave dressed and prepared to catch up on beach time with his friends and he slips and falls in front of the team, Artemis, Red Tornado and Batman.
Artemis: Wall-Man, huh? I love the uniform. What exactly are your powers?
  • Fanservice: The beach scene.
  • Foreshadowing: M'gann's conversation with Artemis in the end about sisterly relationships leaves the latter stammering and nervous.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Kid Flash blames Artemis for letting Cheshire slip in on her watch. M'gann points out the accusation's hardly fair as she was on watch alongside Artemis. Kid Flash chooses not to blame because of his open crush on her.
  • Immune To Poison: Cheshire dabs her shuriken in jellyfish toxin. She soon discovers that she requires a stronger dose of it for tangling with Aqualad.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his falling out with them and the League, Red Arrow confronts Artemis at the conclusion to let her know that he knows she's not who she says she is but trusts Green Arrow and Batman enough not to blow her cover and warns her not to hurt his friends.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • M'gann, on her way alongside Artemis to aid Aqualad and Roquette, stops in horror when she realises Kid Flash did not respond to the telepathic call for help and she goes to find him.
    • When it's revealed the nanites' third target is a Wayne Tech facility, Robin panics that the information the League of Shadows finds there will be used to hack something important that he chooses not to name. The Batcave, perhaps?
  • Replacement Scrappy: In-Universe. Kid Flash continually treats Artemis as this as he views her as a poor substitute for Roy.
  • That Man Is Dead: Roy Harper gives up the identity of Speedy and becomes Red Arrow.
  • Wham Line: The final line of dialogue in the episode establishes that the Light has an operative on the inside.
  • Wham Shot: The nanites completely destroy Miami Beach University.
    • In terms of the DC Universe, the second target that the nanites attack and completely destroy is even more of this. Down goes STAR Labs.
