- Crucified Hero Shot: Xena ends up getting crucified on the order of Caesar. She even gets her legs broken for her trouble.
- Diving Save: Xena does this to push a child out of the way of a log trap.
- Downer Ending: Xena ends up dying, but she is at least determined to return to the living.
- Julius Caesar: He makes his first appearance of the show.
- Pressure Point: The flashbacks reveal how Xena learned how to use them.
- Real Life Writes the Plot: Xena was intended to survive at the end of the episode, but it was changed to allow Lucy Lawless some time to heal from a pelvic wound.
- Start of Darkness: During the episode, Xena was merely a warlord demanding payment for the protection of her town. But with M'Lila's death, she became a true Angel of Death of the land.
