Xena must discover who murdered the Amazon princess Terreis to avert a war between the Amazons and the Centaurs. This episode marks the first appearance of Recurring Character Ephiny.
Tropes
- Amazon Brigade: The first appearance of the Amazon Nation.
- Annoying Arrows: Averted, Terreis dies taking an arrow to the gut.
- Our Centaurs Are Different: Their first appearance in the series. They were at a standoff with the Amazons at the beginning of the episode. Xena revealed that even with her army she could only fight them to a draw.
- Combat by Champion: Gabrielle is given the option to choose a champion to fight for her. Given that her opponent was Queen Melosa, it was a good idea that she had that choice.
- Duel to the Death: Xena takes on Queen Melosa. The former convinces the latter not to follow through after she won.
- Naïve Everygirl: At one point, Gabrielle acts with disgusted shock after she spends several seconds handling a ball of horse dung handed to her by Xena before realizing what it is. It crosses into The Ditz territory when you realize that Gabrielle grew up in Poteidaia, a farming village, and thus spent her entire life around horses (and possibly even cleaning stables.) She should be able to recognize horse dung immediately.
- Public Execution: Gabrielle is pressured to execute a prisoner thought to have killed Terreis.
- Tuck and Cover: Gabrielle dives over to Terreis' side to protect her from incoming arrows.
