Recap / X-Men S3 E12 "Savage Land, Strange Heart, Part 1"

Go To

Sauron kidnaps Storm and brings her to the Savage Land, in order to use her powers free an evil god known as Garrok.

  • A Day in the Limelight: Unlike many other cases, this arc is dedicated to highlighting Sauron, or should we say Karl Lykos.
  • Apologetic Attacker: Karl needs other's energy to sustain himself, but he feels just awful about it and apologizes to the random people he grabs.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Sauron briefly mind-controls Rogue against her fellow heroes. Fortunately, soaking her in water undoes it. Unfortunately, the real target is Storm, the omega-level mutant.
  • Continuity Nod: A great big one to the last time our heroes went to the Savage Land.
  • Fastball Special: It's literally called that, when Wolverine gets Beast to hurl him at one of Sauron's pterodactyl riders.
  • Foreshadowing: Zaladane gives Karl access to a ship previously belonging to Magneto. One of the preprogrammed destinations is Asteroid M.
  • "I Can't Look!" Gesture: After getting caught off guard by Sauron's Hypnotic Eyes in New York, Rogue does this during their rematch in the Savage Land. It leaves her open to a flip by Sauron.
  • Kidnapped for Experimentation: Ka-Zar has already met Karl, considering him a friend and surprised to learn he's Sauron. Karl explains his transformations are the results of Mr. Sinister using him as a test subject for one of his experiments.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Big cats at least. Wolverine dogpiles Zabu and scratches him under the chin.
  • Oh, Crap!: Karl, after realizing the latest guy he tried to feed on in New York is a mutant (Wolverine, to be precise).
  • Pet the Dog: Wolverine mistook Karl for a guy that couldn't afford to buy a hot dog, so he got him one.
  • Shout-Out: This Sauron was obviously named after that guy from The Lord of the Rings - interestingly, it's more of a Split Personality of Karl Lykos, which means he has more in common with Gollum.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Riding a pterodactyl, Jubilee has this reaction after being the only one left to stop Sauron from flying off.
  • Transformation Sequence:
    • Karl Lykos inadvertently turns back into Sauron, in a sequence worthy of the Incredible Hulk.
    • Storm gets one that's completely redone from that time she summoned her silver suit in the first episode.
  • The Worf Effect: Storm happens to be one of the few omega-level mutants in the show, which is precisely why Sauron is goaded into abducting her... by Garrok.
  • Written-In Absence: According to Beast, the rest of the team is unreachable on Muir Island and thus can't even be told about Storm's abduction.
Wolverine: Studyin' Jeanie like a lab rat.
