Recap / X-Men S1 E8 "The Unstoppable Juggernaut"

Go To

The X-Men arrive at a ruined X-Mansion and quickly set to work to find Professor X, who was left behind in the last episode; a psychic scan from Jean reveals he's not in the ruins. Scott quickly finds a hologram of the Professor telling them he went on trip. Wolverine assumes the professor is missing and decides to go looking for him; Scott sends Storm, Rogue, and Jubilee after Wolverine. The trio, however, can't catch up to the mutant and decide themselves to split up.

Jubilee tracks down Wolverine to a group of disgruntled workers who are put out of work because a Russian mutant is using his powers for demolition. Wolverine initially attacks the mutant but realizes that he's not the one who trashed the mansion because his scent is wrong. Wolverine and Jubilee return to Rogue and Storm at the ruins of a bank. Wolverine deduces it was destroyed by the same person who trashed the mansion and he and Jubilee track the scent.

The Russian mutant was at the crime scene, and he's arrested because the police think he's the one who destroyed the bank. Rogue and Storm go to the jail where, after knocking out the guard, they break out the mutant. They also speak to the still imprisoned Beast, who informs them the mutant is named Colossus. Beast refuses to break out too, preferring to wait for his trial, and the trio flee the jail by knocking down walls.

Meanwhile Wolverine and Jubilee track down the guy who trashed the mansion to another bank and call for reinforcements. Wolverine recognizes him as the Juggernaut and attacks him, while the Juggernaut boasts about destroying the mansion. The Juggernaut defeats Wolverine but the rest of the X-Men arrive and work together to remove the Juggernaut's helmet. Once it's gone, Jean uses Cerebro to send a massive psionic attack which disorients the Juggernaut, and he wanders off in a daze.

Later, the X-Men, with the aid of Colossus, start the process of rebuilding the X-Mansion.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: The team prevails over the Juggernaut because they worked together.
Wolverine: [to Cyclops] Maybe there's somethin' to that wimpy teamwork garbage of yours, after all.
  • Batman Gambit: Because no one was at the mansion when he trashed it, the Juggernaut started robbing banks to get Xavier's attention.
  • Chrome Champion: Colossus.
  • Commuting on a Bus: Colossus gets sent to the same facility that's holding Beast.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Juggernaut laughs when Rogue tries to absorb his powers and the backlash drives her crazy, but he is a little woozy afterwards; it's unlikely to have stopped him much until Jean intervenes on his own vulnerable mind.
  • Freak Out: Rogue has a massive one when she absorbs the Juggernaut's mystical powers.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Rogue's Freak Out illustrates that this motivates the Juggernaut.
"Charles, you had it easy. You were the good one. But now I'm the strongest, and I will destroy you and your pathetic X-Men!"
  • Immune to Bullets: The Juggernaut.
  • The Juggernaut: The Trope Namer is the Monster of the Week, whose powers are mystical in origin, is unstoppable and invulnerable and has a helmet that can stop psychic attacks.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Jean gives one to the Juggernaut, albeit one that will wear off in time.
  • Let's Split Up, Gang!: Storm, Rogue, and Jubilee decide to split while searching for Wolverine.
  • Mundane Utility: Colossus uses his powers for demolition, allowing him to earn his keep.
  • National Stereotypes: Colossus is a stereotypical Russian.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Colossus and the Juggernaut.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Colossus attempted to stop the Juggernaut at the bank. When the unstoppable man got away and the police showed up afterwards, Colossus got arrested instead.
  • Oh, Crap!: Jubilee's reaction after being informed that the bank robber is the Juggernaut, and seeing him in action:
(Juggernaut shrugs off cannon-fire, while kicking police cars and tanks aside, and running over more police cars)
Jubilee: I think I get the idea...
  • Power Copying: Rogue, who absorbs the mystical powers of the Juggernaut.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: The foreman who hired Colossus doesn't seem to mind that he's a mutant and congratulates him for doing his job. He also tries to talk the other workers out of attacking him.
  • Rebuilt Set: At the end of the episode, the X-Mansion is being rebuilt.
  • Red Herring: Colossus is suspected by Wolverine and Jubilee of destroying the mansion due to his power. After catching his scent, though, Wolverine realizes he's not the culprit.
  • Status Quo Is God: The mansion only remains in ruins until the end of the episode. Subverted with Professor X, who's still missing at the end.
  • The Strategist: Cyclops/Scott Summers, who designs The Plan the X-Men use to remove the Juggernaut's helmet.
  • Super-Strength: Colossus, Rogue, and the Juggernaut, who is strong enough to lift buildings.
  • Trash the Set: The X-Mansion is in ruins, although the hangar and war room are intact.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: As in the comics, the Juggernaut is invulnerable to all physical punishment, but he can't handle telepathic attacks.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Beast promises Colossus that the X-Men will prove his innocence. We never see this happen; given that Juggernaut doesn't remember the crime by the end of the episode and thus can't confess, we'll just have to hope that the bank's cameras caught enough to prove Colossus innocent.
  • Wrong Context Magic: Juggernaut got his powers from magic, whereas most people in X-Men get theirs from genetic mutations.
