Recap / X Men Evolution S 3 E 2 The Stuff Of Heroes

Go To

While Storm and Beast step in front of the Senate to try curbing the rampant anti-mutant crowd, the rest of the X-Men have to stop Juggernaut, who has been unleashed by Mystique and is threatening to destroy a dam.

Tropes included:

  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: Cyclops points this out during the stand-off with the military. He says any one of them could easily total the choppers in a variety of ways, but that that would make them look even worse to the public. He orders a more defensive response (disabling the equipment but keeping the pilots safe), saying that's exactly what Xavier would want.
  • Big Dam Plot: The X-Men have to stop The Juggernaut from destroying a dam.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The X-Men are cleared of all charges and find Xavier, but the mansion is still destroyed and not all the anti-mutant sentiment has gone away.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Rogue talks about absorbing Juggernaut's memories and then realizes she now knows where Xavier is.
  • Fastball Special: A more realistic variant: Kitty helps Rogue get onto Juggernaut's shoulders by tossing her up in the air, similar to a cheerleader doing a basket toss. This allows Rogue to knock Juggernaut out with her powers.
  • For the Evulz: Juggernaut wants to destroy a dam to flood a town and kill thousands of people just because he wants to.
  • Foreshadowing: Juggernaut's reappearance gives several hints about Professor X's whereabouts.
    • Juggernaut is riding on a train that's presumably going somewhere other than Bayville.
    • He doesn't show any desires to get revenge on Professor X.
    • When the X-Men arrives to stop him, Juggernaut taunts them that Professor X is not with them, as if he knows what really happened to him.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: Trask has been arrested and charged.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Juggernaut actually gave the X-Men a chance to prove to they are heroes and help shown the world that not all mutants are bad when he put a town in danger and tried to flood it by destroying the dam.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Subverted. Cyclops worries trying to stop the Juggernaut will lead to this, but it gives the X-Men a much needed PR boost.
  • Pet the Dog: Though he disagreed with Cyclops taking charge, Wolverine ultimately congratulates him on his good leadership.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: The President in his address to all citizens (normal humans and mutants alike). He also announces the X-Men are cleared and calls for understanding.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Wolverine over Cyclops taking charge his way.
  • Underestimating Badassery: The Juggernaut assumes the X-Men are no threat without Xavier's telepathy. He is proven very wrong.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Averted. The X-Men get their due from the government for stopping the Juggernaut.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Wolverine towards Cyclops for defying his orders to go on offense against the military. Cyclops hits back that he's advocating what Xavier taught them and making use of Wolverine's own training.
