Go To

Mystique returns to the Brotherhood with a mentally unstable, but immensely strong and powerful mutant named Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch), much to the horror of her twin brother Pietro.

Tropes included:

  • The Bad Guy Wins: Blob is ecstatic that the Brotherhood actually won for once.
  • Bedlam House: Wanda was abandoned at one of these by her father when she was just a child. As a result, all she can think of after being broken out is getting revenge on him for leaving her there.
  • Butt-Monkey: Poor Toad. When he asks if that's really Mystique, he gets thrown out of the room. When Boom-Boom tries to give Mystique a "surprise," it gets tossed to Toad instead.
  • Continuity Nod: Mystique knows about Lance's attempt to switch sides.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • Pietro does try to reach out to Wanda and reach an understanding, though some of this is clearly motivated by fear. She does at least ease off on him, saving her rage for their father.
      • Later, Pietro insists to Mystique that this isn't the case between him and Magneto on the grounds that he's been a lousy dad. Later episodes indicate, though, he's lying.
    • Avalanche tells Kitty to leave before the fight starts.
  • It's All My Fault: Xavier blames himself for the loss, saying he didn't properly train the team to deal with threats like this.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: As Wanda disrupts everyone's powers, Jean calls for the retreat.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Mystique's return to the house sees her point out how the Brotherhood has gotten lazy this season and not even tried to hone their skills.
  • A Lesson in Defeat: When the X-Men first fight against the Scarlet Witch who completely trounces them. While the team comes out of it okay, they are a bit shaken by the encounter and Xavier muses this defeat may have been good for them in order to grow stronger.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Pietro when he sees Mystique's new secret weapon is his sister.
    • The moment Wanda enters the battle, Spyke remarks, "Bad vibe."
  • Only Sane Man: Pietro points out how volatile Wanda is and how Mystique is playing with fire.
  • Properly Paranoid: Mystique questions where Pietro's loyalties lie, especially since he's sided with Magneto against her in the past.
  • Relative Error: As Wanda attacks Pietro and tears the place apart, the others ask if she's an ex-girlfriend. Pietro says worse: his sister.
  • Villain Decay: The episode is largely about how the Brotherhood went from a threat in Season 1 to a bunch of pathetic slackers that the heroes routinely laugh at in Season 2. Mystique openly condemns this development and ensures they shake it off.
