Recap / X Men Evolution S 1 E 9 Survival Of The Fittest

Go To

The X-Men and the Brotherhood battle each other in a summer camp, but must cooperate when a large and unstoppable mutant named Cain Marko (Juggernaut) threatens both Charles Xavier and Mystique.

Tropes included:

  • Boot Camp Episode: The X-Men and Brotherhood go to a survival training camp.
  • City Mouse: Spyke grouses about having to go to this camp on the basis that he's a big city kid.
  • Deus Exit Machina: No one can stop the Juggernaut, but it's even harder to try when most of the team is away. Storm also leaves the mansion explicitly to go get them.
  • Enemy Mine: The X-Men and the Brotherhood against the Juggernaut.
  • Exact Words: The camp leader issues a special rule in Capture The Flag. Either full team must have a picture with the flag. Before the X-Men and Brotherhood take off to the mansion, they return the flag and a picture of both full teams.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Toad's abilities make mountain climbing a cinch.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Mystique lets Juggeraut out to get his revenge in exchange for helping her claim Cerebro. He betrays her at the first opportunity and intends to kill her along with Xavier.
  • I Lied: "I don't make deals!"
  • It's Personal: Cyclops wants to beat the Brotherhood, due to their history of getting away with stuff.
  • Mirror Character: Cyclops and Avalanche are both extremely competitive and willing to use powers (theirs or their teammates') to cheat.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Jean Grey is dressed as Lara Croft, essentially, with a sexy green tank top, shorts, and a single long braid the entire episode.
  • Not So Above It All: The normally by-the-book Cyclops becomes ultra-competitive and wanting to outdo the Brotherhood.
  • Oh, Crap!: Xavier when he learns Juggernaut is loose.
  • Only Sane Woman: Jean is the only one trying to talk some sense into Cyclops.
  • Save the Villain: The X-Men end up having to save the Brotherhood from a collapsed mine.
  • Screw the Rules, They Broke Them First!: Cyclops is normally level-headed and refuses to use his powers to cheat, but when Avalanche uses his powers to knock him into the water during a boat race, Cyclops retaliates by using his power to blast Avalanche's boat. He also becomes more willing to use powers to win just so they can beat the Brotherhood.
  • Shout-Out: Jean Grey’s outdoor outfit seems to be a copy of 90s era Lara Croft. Right down to the braid.
  • Spanner in the Works: Mystique has Juggernaut infiltrate the mansion so she can get the Cerebro helmet. In his rage-fueled rampage, however, he wrecks it, much to her frustration.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Lampshaded. The sergeant's big challenge is claiming a flag at the top of a tall mountain. Quicksilver notes he could run up there right now to get it, while Nightcrawler adds he could simply teleport. It's rendered moot by the sergeant wanting every member of the winning team to take a photo at the summit as proof they all did it, and by Cyclops and Avalanche wanting to prove their superiority by doing this (mostly) without powers.
  • Training from Hell: The X-Men we’re given the option to either go to camp for their training or let Wolverine be in charge of it. They all agreed they would have a better chance of surviving the camp.
  • Unstoppable Force Meets Immovable Object: Said word for word by Blob when he faces off against Juggernaut. He holds his own at the start, but is quickly overwhelmed by Juggernaut.
  • Villain Respect: In the end, Avalanche gives Cyclops his due.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Xavier admits it's a shame that the X-Men and Brotherhood working together will be a rare occurrence. Cyclops agrees.
