All the Tears of Hell (in French Toutes les larmes de l'enfer) is the third album of the comic book series XIII. It was published in 1986.
XIII is convicted of the murders of Jeremie and Matt Rowland. He is sentenced to life in a high-security asylum. At the same time, General Carrington is told by Amos that XIII is not Steve Rowland.
All the Tears of Hell provides examples of:
- Absurdly Spacious Sewer: XIII and Billy try to escape from Plain Rock asylum through the sewer.
- The Alcatraz: Plain Rock asylum is inescapable: it has guards, watchtowers, one only entrance, no window; the prisoners are chained at night; and it is in the middle of the desert.
- Bedlam House: Plain Rock asylum, with a Mad Doctor who likes electroshock therapy very much.
- Berserk Button: Do not tell Dr Johansson that he is crazy.
- Bound and Gagged: A guard is bound and gagged by XIII when he tries to escape.
- The Cavalry: Jones arrives just in time to prevent Dr Berger from injecting a poison into XIII.
- Chekhov's Gun: The Mongoose's visitor badge. It becomes relevant when we realize that XIII managed to grab and to hide it.
- Dead Person Impersonation: XIII had plastic surgery to impersonate the late Steve Rowland.
- Electric Torture: The purpose of the electric shock treatment given by Dr Johansson is just to make XIII suffer.
- Evil Gloating: The Mongoose asks a special permission to see XIII in the visiting room and he tells him that he has hired someone in the asylum to kill him.
- Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: Billy has a beautiful face, but he is a psycho killer.
- False Innocence Trick: Billy makes XIII believe that he was wrongly convicted. XIII escapes with him. During the escape, Billy kills chief warder Mc Bride and it makes clear that he is a real psycho killer.
- Fate Worse than Death: Plain Rock asylum. Billy says he would have prefered to be sentenced to death.
- Foreshadowing:
- Lullaby says she hopes Jones won't bring problems to Dr Berger. He will die because of her.
- Dr Berger tells Jones that he has found a way to stop working at the asylum. He has accepted the Mongoose's offer and he will try to kill XIII.
- Amos tells Carrington that Ross Tanner is claustrophobic. XIII is obviously not claustrophobic: he spends a long time in a small cell. This is a clue that XIII is not Ross Tanner.
- The Fundamentalist: Dr Johansson considers he has a divine mission and he thinks the prisoners are sick animals rejected by God.
- Go Among Mad People: XIII ends up in Plain Rock asylum because his lawyer pleaded he was insane when XIII was tried for the murders of Jeremie and Matt Rowland.
- Government Conspiracy: This episode reveals that the conspiracy who planned the assassination of William Sheridan is a group of powerful people with accomplices in the army and the government.
- Great Escape: XIII tries to escape from Plain Rock asylum with Billy. He fails, but later, Jones successfully helps him to escape.
- Hairpin Lockpick: XIII picks the lock of his bed and Billy's bed with a visitor badge.
- Heroic Seductress: Jones charms Dr Berger to get into the asylum and help XIII to escape.
- Hooker with a Heart of Gold: Lullaby really cares for Dr Berger.
- I Need a Freaking Drink: Carrington asks for a drink after he hears that XIII had plastic surgery to look like the real Steve Rowland. Invoked Trope: Carrington already knew XIII underwent plastic surgery, he was one of those who organized it in the first place but he doesn't want Amos to know that.
- Love Redeems: Dr Berger prevents a policeman from shooting at XIII and Jones, because he is in love with Jones.
- Morally Ambiguous Doctorate:
- Dr Johansson, who is a Psycho Psychologist.
- Dr Berger, who was hired by the the Mongoose to kill XIII.
- A Nazi by Any Other Name: Lampshaded by Allenby who says that the members of the conspiracy have a tattoo just like the SS.
- Prison Episode: XIII is imprisoned in Plain Rock high-security asylum.
- Prisoner's Work: The prisoners have to make baskets.
- Psycho Psychologist: Dr Johansson, who likes electroshock therapy very much, and has a mystic approach of his work.
- Redemption Equals Death: Dr Berger tries to kill XIII. Soon thereafter, he decides to help Jones and XIII: he prevents a policeman from shooting at XIII and Jones and dies in the process.
- Retirony: The chief warder Mc Bride says he will retire soon. Of course, he is killed by Billy when he tries to escape with XIII.
- The Reveal: XIII had plastic surgery to look like the real Steve Rowland.
- Road Block: The police sets road blocks to catch XIII and Jones when they escape from the asylum.
- Schmuck Bait: Billy shouts to pull the guard into the cell.
- Sequencing Deception: XIII tells Billy he will try to escape without him. Then we see Billy shouting that XIII is a bastard and he tells the guard that XIII will try to escape. Actually, there was an offscreen discussion between XIII and Billy; XIII finally agreed to take Billy with him; Billy's shouts are a trick to escape.
- Sickbed Slaying: Dr Berger tries to kill XIII by injecting him a poison while he is on a hospital bed.
- Surgical Impersonation: XIII is not the real Steve Rowland. He had plastic surgery to impersonate him. The said surgery was very successful, given the fact that Steve's family did not spot the impostor in Where the Indian Walks.
- Two Lines, No Waiting: There is XIII in Plain Rock asylum on the one hand, and Carrington listening to Amos in Washington on the other hand.
