Recap / Word Girl S 7 E 1 Kid Math

Go To

Original airdate: August 4th, 2014

WordGirl meets a new, math-based superhero.

The episode's associated vocabulary words are "calculate" and "equation" for part one, and "reproduce" and "hint" for part two.

"Kid Math" contains the following tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: On their third meeting, Dr. Two-Brains finds himself unable to remember Kid Math's name and guesses it to be "Arithmetic Lad".
  • Applied Mathematics: As is appropriate for the episode's guest hero, the recap that starts the second half of the episode has Kid Math + WordGirl and Captain HuggyFace + Dr. Two-Brains = WordGirl and Captain HuggyFace in a cage.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: According to Kid Math, Hexagon is home to the smartest people and the tastiest raisins in the universe.
  • Beat Them at Their Own Game: Parodied. While the heroes are brainstorming ideas on how to defeat Dr. Two-Brains, Rex suggests turning the city into cheese first to beat the villain at his own game. Becky can only sigh in response.
  • Birdcaged: At the Ray Amplifier Emporium, Dr. Two-Brains' henchmen trap WordGirl, Captain HuggyFace, and Kid Math in oversized birdcages made of energy. Turns out the store merged with the Giant Cage Outlet.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Kid Math, even moreso early on as lampshaded by a confused Dr. Two-Brains.
Dr. Two-Brains: What is this guy's deal? I'm in a middle of a crime and he just storms in, doesn't say anything witty or challenging, just starts with the fighting! What is that?
  • Extra-Long Episode: This is one of the episodes with a single story all the way through, instead of the normal two shorts format.
  • Facepalm:
    • WordGirl does this when Kid Math misapplies his "secret identity" lesson and introduces himself as "Rex" while in his Kid Math persona.
    • Bob does it when Rex immediately freezes up while trying to think of an excuse to get him and Becky out of art class.
  • Finger Wag: Dr. Two-Brains does this when WordGirl asks what his plan is, telling her that's for him to know and for her to (preferably not) find out.
  • Hand Gagging: Captain HuggyFace does this to stop Kid Math from blurting out his secret identity while the three are confronting Dr. Two-Brains on his blimp.
  • Idiosyncrazy: Discussed. When trying to figure out a plan to defeat Dr. Two-Brains, Kid Math asks Becky if he's "a villain who has a thing", to which she replies in the affirmative.
  • If My Calculations Are Correct: Kid Math has a rather unimpressive take on this trope.
Kid Math: We stopped phase one of Dr. Two-Brains' evil plan. According to my calculations, that leaves one more phase to stop!
  • Imagine Spot: When Rex suggests that he and Becky stop Dr. Two-Brains by tearing down the city before turning it into cheese, he has one of Kid Math, WordGirl, and Captain HuggyFace standing in a ruined city looking over their "handiwork" while Dr. Two-Brains and his henchmen look dumbfounded.
  • Literal-Minded: When WordGirl finds out that Kid Math is from a planet just across the solar system from her own, she excitedly asks, "What are the odds?". Kid Math replies that they're 3,476,543 to 1.
  • Look Behind You: When WordGirl arrives at the Ray Amplifier Emporium, she finds Kid Math already captured by Dr. Two-Brains. When she questions how this happened, Dr. Two-Brains explains that he just had to point and go, "Hey, what's that?", which Kid Math fell for completely. He even falls for it a second time even after Dr. Two-Brains mocked him for falling for it the first time.
  • Oblivious to Hints: Kid Math. When Becky enunciates and winks in an attempt to remind him to act like a regular kid, he just asks what she's doing with her eye. Then adds that he can help her if something's wrong with it since he's a superhero.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud:
    • Kid Math yells "Woosh!" as he flies across the playground.
    • Dr. Two-Brains goes "Pow!" when his henchmen drop a cage on the heroes from above.
  • Severely Specialized Store: The Ray Amplifier Emporium, where Dr. Two-Brains gets, you guessed it, an amplifier for his latest ray. It's later revealed that the store also merged with the Giant Cage Outlet. One guess what that one sells.
  • Stunned Silence: WordGirl, Captain HuggyFace, and the villains present react this way to Kid Math's sudden and bombastic introduction in the middle of WordGirl's battle with Dr. Two-Brains.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Somehow, Rex is even worse at concealing his secret identity than Becky, as can be seen when he tries to blend in with the school children.
Rex: Hello there, Earth kids! I'm sure not Kid Math at all!
  • Take a Third Option: Dr. Two-Brains tries to impose a Sadistic Choice on WordGirl by escaping as his henchmen threaten the city with his cheese ray, meaning that she has to choose between taking him to justice and saving the city. Kid Math points out that since there are two superheroes present, they can just split up, with one stopping Two-Brains while the other stops the henchmen.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: When WordGirl sees that she and Kid Math are about to be hit by a cheese tower Dr. Two-Brains was able to kick down due to the superheroes being busy talking, she just sighs in response.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Downplayed. When Becky asks Kid Math how he knew she's WordGirl, he just looks her over for a second and asks if she's serious.
