Episode 70: Embattled

Takes place 23-27 October 2011.

Short version

This is a primarily Renegade episode, where the Renegade leads an assault on the thoroughly corrupt rulership of Britain, arresting the perpetrators en masse, and making contact with their ally in a parallel Earth.

Longer version

The Renegade helps Circe choose a location for her new magic school, then visits the Justice League to inform them of his plans to purge the British government, although he misleads them about the timing.

Before launching his campaign, he visits his chosen temporary prime minister, then briefs a collection of Britain's superheroes (mostly to avoid the bad PR of fighting them).

The assault starts at the Caligula Club, where the Renegade brings a group of the more competent superheroes, crushes all resistance, captures everyone inside, and collects evidence. However, in an office, he finds and touches a flag that transports himself and Sir Cyril to a parallel universe Britain ruled by Queen Morgan, which has had regular contact with the Caligula Club.

The Queen herself turns out to have prepared an army, with Major Kelly present and requesting her military aid in stopping the Renegade's forces and retaking the British government. She's interested in his offer as a way of weakening Britain in order to seize the throne, but allows a Trial by Combat between Kelly and the Renegade to settle it.

Kelly then reveals that he has the Terror Thing bound, and merges with it, causing the Renegade's yellow ring to jump to him as "a superior potential bearer." However, the Renegade is able to break their link by assimilating the stone he used, then defeat Kelly and the Terror Thing separately with the Sword of the Fallen.

With Queen Morgan agreeing not to enter the fight, Sir Cyril takes the opportunity to open diplomatic relations instead.

In that Paragon timeline, Paul is interviewed and explains why he stole a fruit from the Garden of Eden, as well as introduces the newly angelic Angelica to the public.

The title presumably refers to the Renegade's fight against the forces of corrupt Britain.

  • Alternate Universe: The Renegade visits a parallel version of Britain, ruled by Queen Morgen le Fey, who has had long-term contact with the corrupt elements of the British government.
  • Government Conspiracy: Most of the British government are involved in evildoing ranging from tax fraud to cannibalism and paedophilia.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: The Renegade's yellow ring jumps over to Major Kelly and gives him a sporting chance. Though the Renegade still beats him with greater experience and skill.
  • Only the Chosen May Wield: The Renegade's yellow ring switches sides when Major Kelly is possessed by the Terror Thing, as it considers him a superior potential bearer.
  • Supernatural Fear Inducer: The Terror Thing, equipped with a yellow power ring. Fortunately for the Renegade, he's quite resistant to magical influences, including fear effects.
  • Trial by Combat: Queen Morgan le Fey lets the Renegade and Major Kelly fight for the privilege of receiving her help.
