Episode 7: Acceptance

Takes place July 27-August 20

Short version

The Team rescues the Helmet of Fate from being stolen by Klarion the Witch Boy, but its wearer, Kent Nelson, is killed.

Longer version

Paul meets Kent Nelson, holder of the powerful Helmet of Fate, who wants to find a successor and retire. Paul himself is unavailable, but suggests contacting John Constantine; Mr Nelson is skeptical, having heard poor reports about him, but agrees to do his own investigation. He also examines Paul and informs him that — very unusually — Paul has no soul, leaving him with no resistance to magic.

Almost a month later, Paul visits Jade in Belle Reve Penitentiary. Warden Waller is not pleased to see him, but can't easily forbid him to interview prisoners. Jade isn't keen to reform, but does warm up to him enough that she's willing to talk.

The Team then learns that Mr Nelson is missing, and they go to rescue him. They find him outside the Tower of Fate, being held captive by Klarion the Witch Boy, along with minions Abra Kadabra and Onomatopoeia; Paul is able to rescue Mr Nelson and take Kadabra out of the fight, but Klarion then cripples him with chaos magic, and the Team retreats inside the Tower.

Mr Nelson draws most of the chaos magic out, but is unable to remove the last traces, and without a soul, Paul won't recover normally. The Team then goes to the Tower roof to retrieve the Helmet before Klarion (who has broken into the Tower) can steal it. However, Klarion manages to kill Mr Nelson, and Kid Flash has to put on the Helmet of Fate to fight him.

Paul is at low ring charge after constantly healing himself from the magic damage, but successfully turns Klarion's cat Teekl, who was the anchor for Klarion's power, into an orange construct, which results in Klarion losing most of his power and fleeing. Nabu, the sentience bound to the Helmet, is reluctant to let Kid Flash go, but relents in exchange for Mr Nelson's spirit remaining with the Helmet to keep him company.

In the aftermath, Paul has Cornwall Boy finish removing the chaos magic from him, and finds that Cornwall Boy is interested in joining the team if accepted. He also visits Abra Kadabra and offers to help him fulfill his dream to learn magic, if Kadabra willingly serves his time in jail and goes straight.

There is no Renegade interlude, but it is later revealed that he stomped Teekl dead instead of assimilating her, with similar effects on Klarion's power.

Equivalent canon episode: "Denial". "Acceptance" likely refers to Kid Flash grudgingly accepting that magic exists (in the sense that magicians are manipulating some real phenomenon, albeit not yet well understood, rather than merely using illusion), unlike in canon.

  • Achilles' Heel:
    • Klarion notices that Paul has no soul and thus no magic resistance, making it easy to cripple him with a spell that would normally have only a brief effect.
    • Orange Lantern targets Teekl, Klarion's anchor on the mortal plane, in order to defeat him.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: Jade didn't hear what Paul said after wrapping her up in construct tentacles to arrest her, but he felt bad about it afterward. When she persuades him to tell her, she busts up laughing.
Jade: Are you even allowed to watch that kind of movie?
  • Body Snatcher: Nabu is revealed to do this to whomever puts on the helmet in order to exist in the physical world.
  • De-power: Taking Teekl seems to have stripped Klarion of all his power. He is reduced to using a magic item on his person to escape capture.
  • Deadly Dodging: OL avoiding Klarion's attacks leads to one of them striking Teekl.
  • Familiar: Teekl is Klarion's familiar, and without her, he can't exist in the physical realm.
  • Killed Off for Real: Kent Nelson dies after being struck by Klarion.
  • No-Sell: Klarion can take anything the Team throws at him.
  • Shout-Out: Paul quotes Agatha Heterodyne when telling Kid Flash that magic is indeed real.
  • Spit Take: Cheshire chokes on a biscuit after Paul calls Artemis by her name and reveals that he isn't actually aware that it's her real name.
  • Sufficiently Analyzed Magic: Said verbatim by Paul in order to convince Kid Flash that magic exists and that it can be used to explain things science can't explain.
  • What Would X Do?: Paul thinks to himself "What would John Constantine do?" in order to figure out how to beat Klarion.
  • Words Can Break My Bones: Onomatopoeia makes sound effects which then have an effect on actual objects and people.
