Episode 62: Collegiality

Takes place August 23-24.

Short version

Paul works with the Green Lantern Corps to recover some of the lost orange rings from the Berrith, and recruits Ranx the sentient battle station.

Longer version

Paul visits Oa to meet with the Guardians and discuss his actions and the interaction between the Green and Orange Corps. The Guardians are cautiously pleased that Larfleeze no longer has the Orange Light Fountain, but unimpressed by it being put into active use, and suspicious of how Paul knew about it. They are further unimpressed when their meeting is interrupted by the news that some of the scattered orange rings made it to the planet New Berrith, whose inhabitants are so antisocial that the Guardians ordered them isolated.

Working with Green Lanterns Gardner and Ch'p, Paul tracks the Berrith Lanterns down on the sentient battle station Ranx, and learns that they are recharging the rings from the staff of a captured Indigo Lantern. Paul frees the Indigo Lantern (who thanks him, but teleports away without helping), and makes a deal with Ranx to allow the Green Lanterns on board for a duel with the Berrith. After winning the fight and recovering the rings, Paul then recruits Ranx and gives him/it a ring, which further alarms the Guardians.

The Renegade encounters the true Grayven of universe 16, and resolves to visit Darkseid in order to cement his own credentials.

The title likely refers to the cooperation between Orange and Green Lanterns.

  • Alpha Strike: It's not really possible to fill space with shots, but Ranx gives it a solid attempt. The gravity disrupters are particularly dangerous, but when they're not immediately successful, it opens up with secondary batteries, plus point defence lasers. The barrage doesn't kill Lantern Gardner, but does persuade him to retreat until Paul can negotiate with Ranx.
  • A Master Makes Their Own Tools: Invoked by Weaponer Kalmin, who intends to study the ring he was given and then forge his own.
Kalmin: Or perhaps another colour; I'm sure that I can hate enough for red.
  • The Collector: Paul gives Ranx a power ring. After seeing him recruit Ragnar and Kalmin, Lantern Gardner is not impressed.
  • Combat Pragmatist: In his demonstration spar with Lantern Kilowog, Paul takes out a psi-shock grenade, explains how it works, says he won't be using it, then tosses it aside. When Kilowog indicates he's ready to start, Paul remote-detonates it.
Paul: You serve the law, not your personal honour code.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: A group of five over-enthusiastic rookie Green Lanterns spots Paul when he arrives on Oa, and tries to attack him. The next chapter starts with him giving a lecture about proper policing practice, while holding all their rings on an orange chain.
  • Dirty Coward: Maybe. Ub'x the Indigo Lantern certainly ran away quickly enough once Paul freed him from the Berrith.
  • Doppelgänger: Renegade!Grayven meets the native universe 16 Grayven. They don't get along.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Lantern Kilowog. Since he's literally training rookies to be stubborn and focused, he has good cause.
  • Duel to the Death: Paul negotiates this with Ranx; by winning, he gains the right to evict the Berrith and take command of the station. Some of the Berrith survive, but disarmed of their rings; others he kills.
  • Genius Loci: Ranx the sentient battle station.
  • It's Personal: Ranx doesn't take well to any kind of intruder, but it reacts especially badly to Green Lanterns, after the Guardians left it without a crew.
Ranx: DIE GREEN LANTERNS DIE DIE DIE!
  • Meditation Power Up: Paul discovers a powerful new capability, using the Honden of Avarice to locate people by their desires and teleport to them, at any range. Unfortunately, he first uses it before he fully understands it, and lands in the sights of a hostile battle station.
  • Tempting Fate: Averted. Paul states that he certainly doesn't expect to meet Sinestro on Oa of all places - and when he visits Oa, he doesn't meet Sinestro.
  • Trash Talk: After the rookies' unprovoked attack, Paul is annoyed enough to pick a fight with Lantern Kilowog (specifically targeting his training of Lantern Gardner). He's not really angry at Kilowog, though, just spoiling for a more challenging fight.
Paul: It only took me a few weeks to get most of the stuff you taught him out of his head so I could teach him how to do it properly.
  • The Unpronounceable: Humanoids can't say pseudo-anemone Lantern Blob-Blob's actual name.
