Episode 15: Inhumanity

Takes place 3-11 October 2010.

Short version

The Team tracks down the Morrow androids just in time to prevent a supervolcano eruption from ending human civilisation.

Longer version

To grant Paul a soul and remove his vulnerability to magic, John Constantine tattoos a magic diagram onto him to gather ambient magic and impose structure on it. Upon learning about this, Giovanni Zatara visits Paul at Mount Justice in alarm, having troubled history with Constantine, but Paul assures him that everything is alright and that he had Aqualad with him when the tattoos were done, and Queen Mera to look over the designs before they even started.

Zatanna Zatara attempts to follow her father, and Paul allows her through the zeta tube and invites her to meet the Team. Mr Zatara isn't keen on her joining, but allows her to get to know them.

A few days later, the Team plus Zatanna go out to find Red Tornado themselves after the Justice League tells them not to interfere. They find the Reds in Yellowstone Park and are confronted by the newest one: Red Volcano. They hold their own well, forcing Red Volcano to start a volcanic eruption. He is taken down thanks to the aid of Red Inferno and Red Torpedo, but the eruption process is already underway. The Team does its best to stop it, only succeeding thanks to the intervention of Hal and Guy.

In the Renegade timeline, the attack at the Cave in "Home Font" was thwarted thanks to the Renegade having the strength to defeat Red Torpedo even without the ring. Red Inferno is then neutralized and with the information from the Reds, the Justice League is able to apprehend the Morrow android and keep all of his research.

Equivalent canon episode: "Humanity". The change to "Inhumanity" may reflect the fact that the Red Robots are not actually human, as well as the awfulness of Red Volcano's attempt to destroy all life on Earth.

  • Armor Is Useless: Thoroughly inverted. When Zatanna shows off her draft superhero costume, Paul tries to find the right words to tell her gently how impractical it is. Then he introduces her to the man who made his own armour.
Paul: It’s... It’s a great costume for a stage magician. It’s just that, well, even if a show goes really badly, the audience generally doesn’t try and shoot you.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Zatara gives one after Zatanna (thanks to Paul's interference) uses the zeta tube to get to the Cave.
  • Brick Joke: When Paul first gets to Earth, he buys clothes from the only store he could find that was open, one that readers, but not Paul, could tell was involved in gun running and drug trafficking. Before fighting Red Volcano, Zatanna tells Paul that store was arrested for doing just that about two months ago.
  • Chekhov's Volcano: Red Volcano causes the supervolcano in Yellowstone Park to erupt.
  • Combat Medic: When gale-force winds appear at Yellowstone, Paul immediately gives all his teammates construct armour and visual enhancements.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Teth Adom's soul has been trapped in a tomb for the last five thousand years, and now he's out again.
  • Innocent Fanservice Guy: Paul shows off his tattoos while he is intoxicated with magic, tattoos that go from the base of his spine, to his torso and arms, unintentionally showing off his body to the Team, much to Artemis and Zatanna's delight.
  • Power Tattoo: The episode makes special mention about how all Atlanteans get tattoos that serve as conduits for their magic. Paul gets his own courtesy of John Constantine, and his friend Clarice Sackville.
  • Shout-Out: A joke that Paul tells Zatanna, M'gann, and Artemis is paraphrased from this fanfic.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Red Torpedo and Red Inferno are damaged in the fight with Red Volcano, but Paul is able to save enough of them for their minds to be intact, because their civilian identities are superheroes from a previous generation.
    Paul: (internally) For Alan.
