Recap / Wild Kratts S 1 E 37 Stuck On Sharks

Go To

Martin and Chris are on a mission to uncover the secret life of the mysterious great white shark. They use Aviva's incredible Remora Rocketsub to "stick with" a female shark and learn that the giant predator of the sea actually has many challenges to contend with and that she could help them discover something that no one has ever seen before—the birth of great white shark pups. But when Gourmand sniffs around looking for ingredients for his shark fin soup recipe, the Wild Kratts team must help rescue their new friend.

Tropes:

  • Assurance Backfire: Martin assures Chris that great white sharks don't eat remoras very often, and that they should be okay since those sharks eat things like seals and fish.
    Chris: "Should be"?
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Jimmy is of the firm belief that sharks lay eggs and shows a shark egg case to Aviva and Koki to prove his point. However, Aviva's health scan of Razor-Mouth, which shows live fetuses, is also correct — great white sharks don't lay eggs like other sharks do, instead having their eggs hatch in their bellies.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Gourmand does this briefly during his villain monologue.
  • Buffy Speak: Koki refers to Sucker-Head as a "remora doodle sticky-head" at one point.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Even before they leave the womb, Aviva thinks that Razor-Mouth's pups are cute. She and Koki are quick to remark on how cute the pups are when they're actually born.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Chris and Martin decide to ride their Manta Riders to explore the world of the great white shark. Unfortunately, they didn't factor in exactly what the shark eats...which just so happens to be manta rays, the basis for the Manta Riders' designs.
  • Evil Poacher: Gourmand is this by default, but special mention goes to him being more than willing to use the fin of a pregnant great white shark for his shark fin soup.
  • High-Dive Hijinks: Martin strikes a few poses just before he dives into the water to touch a remora.
  • Hold the Unsolicited Ingredient: As Chris and Martin go spinning in their Remora Rocketsub, Chris remarks "hold the mayo" in response to Martin realizing that great whites like tuna fish for lunch.
  • Mellow Mantas: Chris and Martin are seen riding with a manta ray at the beginning of the episode, and they follow it to a cleaning station under the sea.
  • Out Giving Birth, Back in Two Minutes: Razor-Mouth goes offscreen to deliver her pups.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: The brothers try to appeal to Gourmand by telling him that Razor-Mouth will die without her fins if he cuts them off to make his shark fin soup. Right before Martin can tell him that she's going to have babies, Gourmand splashes them both with an intentional boat version of a Roadside Wave.
  • Summon Bigger Fish: Played for laughs. Jimmy fires a suction dart at the tank holding Sucker-Head to demonstrate how the remora sticks to sharks. Then he gets a plunger to the butt and gets pulled back by Koki.
  • Super-Strength: A transformed Martin with remora powers is able to stop a moving boat carrying a shark by latching into it and rapidly flapping his fins to move backwards. Even with Gourmand's boat at full power, Martin still manages to hang on and manages to halt the boat's movement, though not without plenty of effort.
  • Surprise Pregnancy: No one is aware that Razor-Mouth is pregnant until Aviva suggests a health scan. Jimmy is quick to be a non-believer, citing that he found a shark egg case while on a trip to the beach with his grandfather the previous summer.
  • Talking Is a Free Action: Chris and Martin are expressing their excitement over finding the secret nursery where some sharks have their babies, but in doing so, they nearly miss Razor-Mouth giving birth, even with Aviva banging on the windows of the Tortuga to get their attention.
  • Threatening Shark:
    • Subverted. Chris and Martin are riding in the ocean and encounter something large casting a shadow over them. While it's presumed to be a dangerous great white shark, it turns out to be the manta ray they were riding with just a minute before.
    • Later played straight when Chris and Martin become under attack by a great white shark due to their Manta Riders looking like manta rays, which sharks eat.
Martin: Uh-oh. Chris, don't great white sharks eat rays?
      Chris: Yeah, they do.
Martin: And don't our Manta Riders kind of look like manta rays?
      Chris: Yeah.
      Chris and Martin: Hide!
  • Tempting Fate: When riding on Razor-Mouth's belly, Martin remarks that he and Chris have nothing to worry about. This is only a minute before they, and Razor-Mouth by extension, are chased by an orca.
  • The Nose Knows: Gourmand is able to smell the Kratt brothers, but can't place where they are in their miniaturized states.
  • Title Drop: Chris and Martin unisonantly drop the title of the episode, but are quickly cut off by the shark they're stuck onto speeding away.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: Chris gives a "nice sharky" when he and Martin try to latch on to a great white shark. Martin's quick to ask him what kind of name "Sharky" is.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Martin has this reaction when he finds out Gourmand's Evil Plan for Razor-Mouth.
