Recap / White Collar S05 E06 "Ice Breaker"

Go To

Peter and Neal go undercover as a figure skating trainer and a sports agent, respectively, to expose a Russian smuggler ring operating in Little Odessa.

Tropes:

  • 13 Is Unlucky: It turns out that the Mosconi codex should not have a chapter 13 because, as Rebecca tells Neal, Mosconi was superstitious and never included a chapter 13 in any of his books.
  • Domestic Abuse: Katya tells Peter that Segri physically abuses her and that would kill her if she refused his marriage proposal.
  • Failures on Ice: Peter and Elizabeth fondly recall their second date, which involved ice skating:
Elizabeth: You were supposed to teach me.
Peter: Well, how could I? You were sprawled out on the ice like Bambi... and looking just as adorable.
  • He Knows Too Much: Ivan is murdered because Sergei and his men believe he might talk to the authorities.
  • Human Shield: During the raid on Sergei's engagement party, Peter uses Katya as a shield and threatens her with a knife. She manages to free herself by stabbing him in the leg.
  • Impersonating an Officer: Mozzie poses as "Agent Gruetzner," meeting up with Rebecca about her missing ID to prevent anyone from discovering that it was Neal who stole it.
  • The Infiltration: Peter goes undercover as a figure skating trainer, while Neal poses as his sports agent.
  • Lured into a Trap: The FBI has Katya accept Sergei's marriage proposal to gather all the Russian criminals they are after in one place, making it easy to apprehend them.
  • The Mafiya: Sergei is part of a Russian crime gang involved in smuggling in Little Odessa.
  • Phoney Call: While snooping around Sergei's office, Neal is caught, but he quickly improvises by pretending to make a phone call, speaking into the receiver despite no one being on the line.
  • Throwing the Distraction: A variant of the trope. Peter hits the puck against the wall next to Ivan and Sergei to divert Ivan's attention and prevent him from recognizing Neal, thus avoiding blowing their cover.
  • Vodka Drunkenski: Neal gives Peter a fake glass when he meets up with Sergei, cautioning him that Sergei will want to drink an entire bottle of vodka with him. Peter refuses and ends up getting very drunk.
  • Wait Here: Peter tells Neal to wait outside of the bar while he talks to Sergei. As Peter knows Neal too well, he already had Jones watching Neal and is therefore not surprised when Neal returns later, pretending that he was just grabbing a coffee for Peter.
