Recap / White Collar S02E12 "What Happens in Burma"

Go To

A college student has been accused of stealing and smuggling a 237 carat rare pigeon-blood ruby out of Burma (Myanmar).

Tropes:

  • Everyone Knows Morse: A variant, and justified. The code is based on touching parts of your body (ear for E, knee for K) or his shirt (letters thereon), and as the son of a high ranking diplomat he had to learn that in case he was ever kidnapped, and he was.
  • Foreshadowing: A driver trashes a parking ticket early on thanks to diplomatic immunity. In the end, Peter is able to delay the ambassador's escape by "dealing with complaints" and walking through parking tickets one by one while the ambassador, exasperated, replies "diplomatic immunity" over and over.
  • Ice-Cream Koan: Neal knows multiple Burmese proverbs. He trotted out the one he understood. "They also say beware a man's shadow and a bee's sting." "What's that mean?" "No idea."
  • Insistent Terminology: A military junta took over Burma and changed the name of the country to Myanmar in 1989 ... a change that is wrapped up in god knows how much ethnic and imperial-colonial crap. The US still officially recognizes Burma as the official name, as recognized by Peter in the show.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Neal changes shirts. There may be a reason in story.
  • Papa Wolf: The US ambassador to the UN is protecting his son in any way he can. "We're not close, but he's still my son."
