Recap / What We Do In The Shadows S 3 E 9 A Farewell

Go To

After the last episode, Nandor opts to enter a Super Slumber of several decades. The roommates don't have long to be preoccupied with this turn of events, as both Colin's 100th birthday and the Supreme Worldwide Vampiric Council delegation's visit have both been scheduled for the same night as well.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: Donal Logue is a vampire, the same gag as season 1's Vampiric Council as an Actor Allusion to playing a vampire before in another work. Unlike last time, Logue explains the Celebrity Paradox by clarifying that he wasn't a vampire when he was in Blade but became one specifically because he enjoyed playing one in the movie.
  • Blood Countess: Carmilla from the Worldwide Supreme Vampiric Council. She's dressed in a typical elegant party dress and gets excited when Nadja tells her she has killed Nandor because he was threatening her power, even though she wouldn't know anything about the situation, so she just got excited at hearing a vampire killed another vampire.
  • Call-Back: Nandor complains that Colin Robinson has pulled the Faking the Dead trick before, like he did in "Colin's Promotion". Nandor's hand puncturing Colin's skull emphasizes, no, he's actually dead now.
  • Character Death: Colin Robinson expires after exactly 100 years of life, as all energy vampires are destined to do.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The page that Laszlo ripped from a Vampiric Council book has info on energy vampires, which explains that they will die at the age of 100, and is the motivator for Laszlo becoming chummier with Colin Robinson throughout the season as a means of giving him a good time before he dies.
  • Didn't Think This Through: When he hears that the Council wants to see Nandor's "dead" body, Guillermo wakes Nandor up so he can fake being dead. Nandor points out that he could have just been left in the super slumber that resembles death rather than having to fake it.
  • Faking the Dead:
    • Nandor does not wish to be interrupted from his Super Slumber for the Worldwide Vampiric Council delegation meeting, so he tells Nadja to tell them that she killed him to usurp total control. They ask to see his body, which leads to this.
    • Subverted at the end of the episode with Colin Robinson. Nandor points out that he pulls this trope constantly, then accidentally caves his head in while prodding the corpse, proving that Colin Robinson really is dead.
  • Gag Penis: It's rumored among vampires that Nandor had one of the largest members among all vampires. When the delegation examines his body, they decide that it's actually pretty average and not at all like what rumor said.
  • Made of Plasticine: Even if vampire strength was involved, Nandor's prodding at Colin Robinson's head caves his skull in like an egg, proving that he's not faking death this time.
  • Pet the Dog: Laszlo reveals that everything he's done the past season was to give Colin Robinson a good time before he dies.
  • Secretly Dying: Towards the end of the episode, Laszlo reveals to Nadja and Guillermo that Colin Robinson's sudden illness is because he's dying. Not even Colin Robinson himself knows about this, as Laszlo learned earlier in the season that all energy vampires die on their 100th birthday but has kept it a secret so Colin Robinson could have a good time before his inevitable death.
