Eclipse is the fourth book of the third Warrior Cats series, Power of Three.

Tropes appearing in this book:

  • Agonizing Stomach Wound: Squirrelflight is badly injured this way during the eclipse battle, and it's not clear at first if she will survive, but she pulls through.
  • Alliterative Family: Graystripe and Millie name their kits Blossomkit, Bumblekit, and Briarkit.
  • Big Badass Battle Sequence: The major battle in this book. All four Clans fighting, until the massive battle is broken up by a solar eclipse which scares them all to death.
  • Ear Notch: Berrynose gains a shredded ear-tip during the eclipse battle.
  • Ensemble Cast: The Power of Three arc features three protagonists: Jaypaw, Hollypaw, and Lionpaw.
  • Gender Bender: Briarkit is mentioned as male once.
Millie nodded. Briarkit was dangling wide-eyed under her chin. It isn't always like this, Hollypaw wanted to tell the tiny kit, not sure if he was old enough to understand.
  • Madness Mantra: When Firestar makes a speech at the end of the book mentioning the warrior code, Hollypaw repeats "the warrior code" repeatedly under her breath. This annoys Jaypaw, though he says nothing more about it.
  • Mercy Kill: ShadowClan medicine cats use deathberries to save dying cats from pain. Leafpool refuses to use them or teach Jaypaw how to use them, feeling that it's up to StarClan to decide when to take a cat.
  • Not His Blood: Jaypaw finds Lionblaze covered in blood during the eclipse battle, but none of it ends up being his.
  • One-Word Title: Eclipse.
  • Past-Life Memories: Cinderpaw has memories of her past life as Cinderpelt, but she has only ever shown signs of remembering them in her dreams, or recalls her past life subconsciously.
  • Physical Therapy Plot: After Cinderpaw hurts her leg a second time, Jaypaw gets frustrated with Leafpool's approach to healing her. By now, Cinderpaw has become too cautious to move, so Jaypaw has her exercise. He teaches her to swim in order to strengthen her leg, and by the end of the healing process, she has finally become a warrior.
  • Posthumous Sibling: Graystripe has three kits with his new mate, Millie, a few years after his daughter Feathertail died.
  • Savage Wolves: Stormfur and Brook mention wolves living in the mountains. Jaypaw sniffs the air, having smelled wolf scent for the first time, and realizes that they smell similar to dogs but have a bloodier smell.
  • Switching P.O.V.: Hollypaw, Jaypaw, and Lionpaw.
  • Total Eclipse of the Plot: The... err... eclipse. It's what the book's named for, after all.
  • Tunnel Network: The cave system, which has tunnels linking ThunderClan and WindClan's territory.
  • What Have I Become?: Lionblaze says this almost word for word after he nearly kills Crowfeather.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Jaypaw with water, ever since their near-drowning in the tunnels. He has to face his fear to teach Cinderpaw to swim so that she can strengthen her leg.
  • With Catlike Tread: There's a scene where RiverClan cats attempt to sneak through ThunderClan's territory. Unused to thick undergrowth, they make a lot of noise just walking through, and then they have a whispered argument about how noisy they're being.
