Recap / Warehouse 13 S 1 E 3 Magnetism

Go To

Artie: "The pattern of behavior here is the result of individual contact with the same artifact. Something they found. They might have seen it. Probably they touched it."
Myka: "What am I looking for?"
Artie: "Anything that might cause an electrical or chemical imbalance in the brain."
Pete: "Well, so, a brain imbalancer. That's easy. It's probably right next to his time-travel machine."
Artie: "No, no. Trust yourselves. You're gonna know it when you see it. That's why we chose you. Instinct and observation."

Pete and Myka are sent to investigate a small town where the inhabitants' are suddenly acting out in unusual ways — an old woman vandalizes the hospital where her husband died; a teenager breaks down in the middle of violin lessons and smashes his instrument; a nun throws herself from the roof of a business believing she can fly. Complicating matters is Myka and Pete's interpersonal conflicts, with both wanting to take point on the investigation and getting fed up with each other's methods. Pete makes an enemy out of the local sheriff. As more and more residents fall under the sway of whatever artifact is causing this behavior, Myka discovers she's also been exposed.

Meanwhile, Artie is confused by the energy flows going on in the warehouse and he seeks help from Leena who may know more about what is going on.

Tropes that Apply to this Episode

  • Action Prologue: The episode opens with Pete and Myka breaking into a museum in Paris to steal the guillotine blade that beheaded Marie Antoinette, complete with a "Mission: Impossible" Cable Drop over a Laser Hallway as Pete swaps the blade for a non-artifact decoy while Myka fends off the guards with her Tesla stun gun.
  • Cool Car: Artie's convertible.
  • Laser Hallway: The museum in Paris.
  • "Mission: Impossible" Cable Drop: An upside down one for Pete at the museum in Paris.
  • Noodle Incident: Pete's truck is still in Lake Michigan; Myka adds how cold that was.
  • Paranoia Fuel: In-universe. Sheriff Mac is already on edge about outsiders infiltrating his town or interfering with his investigation, but the arrival of Pete and Myka exacerbates it. The artifact ramps up his paranoia to the point that he confronts the agents with a suicide bomb strapped to his chest, ranting at them to confess their role in a conspiracy that's causing all the odd behavior in town.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: This between Pete and Myka is highlighted in this episode.
  • Watch the Paint Job:
    • Invoked — Artie begrudgingly lends Pete and Myka his convertible so that they can drive to Unionville, warning them not to damage it the way they did Pete's last car (which is in Lake Michigan).
Artie: All right, take my car. Just no food, no drink, don't go over 55, don't park near anything.
    • Subverted — At the end of the episode Pete needs an enclosed space to get rid of an explosive, and the next scene features him and Myka apologizing to Artie for what happened to his car. Artie runs outside to survey the damage and finds that his car is in pristine condition — Pete and Myka were pulling his leg as payback for pitting them against each other.
Artie: What happened to my car? Did you... Did you ding it?
      Pete: No. Ding? No.
      Myka: Absolutely not.
      Pete: I wouldn't say...
      Artie: Then what?
Pete: Okay, look, I needed somewhere to throw the bomb. Someplace enclosed.
      Artie: Oh, God.
