Recap / Wakfu S1E9 "Ruel's Bag"

Go To

When a herald reports that the fortunes of rich folk are vanishing without a trace, the money-obsessed Ruel makes a detour to his family home to ensure his clan's treasure is secure. However, this just may be what the thief wants...

Tropes:

  • All Just a Dream: Invoked by Ruel, who tries to pass the entire adventure as a nightmare Yugo and the others had after eating too much at Xav's place.
  • Assimilation Backfire: The Monster of the Week is a genie that takes on the properties of what it eats. By eating coins, his body become hard and shiny, so Ruel tricks him into eating chocolate so the genie starts to melt!
  • Bigger on the Inside: In this episode, we learn that Ruel's havresac is the size of a small house on the inside and even has a bed to allow Ruel to sleep in a warm place even in the wilderness.
  • Brick Joke: A few episodes ago, Ruel stated that he didn't want to go through Yugo's portals after seeing how sick it made Dally. In this episode, he goes through one and it makes him sick!
  • Call-Back: According to Xav's father, the talking map Skribble used to belong to him before it was stolen by The Black Crow.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The chocolate coins Ruel picked up from Xav.
  • Continuity Nod: While he's trying to test Gonnard's herald credentials, Dally asks him if he knows what happened to the castle of the Ugly Princesses. Of course he knows someone lift the curse.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: By the time Ruel and Yugo returns to the vault, Amalia, Eva and Dally are all K.O.
  • Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: The DanceDanceRevolution styled lock on Rue's house can only be opened by dancing the tune of the opening theme.
  • Explaining Your Power to the Enemy: Gonnard would have been better inspired to not gloat about his absorption power to Ruel. It doesn't take very long for the wily old Enutrof to find a way to exploit it.
  • Eye Scream: While he's been chased by Gonnard, Ruel manages to throw some coins in his eyes, which causes him to crash against the wall at high speed and lose all his teeth except for one... which Ruel promptly knocks down with another coin.
  • Fun with Homophones: In the French version, there is a bit of confusion when Gonnard introduces himself as a "hérault" (herald), which Yugo and Dally understands as "hero" until Eva clears it up.
  • Hell Hound: The exterior of Ruel's house is guarded by a tiny black dog wreathed in blue fire... who can use magic to turn into a colossal, bulldog-like mastiff at a moment's notice.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: His gold in jeopardy, his friends wounded and Yugo too exhausted to help, Ruel decides to go all out on Gonnard... and eventually manages to defeat him.
  • Material Mimicry: The genie has a variant that applies only to what he eats. While coins make him hard and shiny, chocolate makes him start to melt.
  • Oh, Crap!: Ruel has such a moment when the Herald Gonnard mentions that someone's been targeting the vaults of the richest men in the Land of Twelve, causing him to go and check if his family treasure is still there.
  • Our Genies Are Different: Gonnard is an "Absorbing Genie": appearing as a towering, pointy-eared humanoid with Fog Feet, Gonnard gets more powerful depending on what he eats, and gold makes him incredibly strong, hard and with peerless shiny hair, as well as being able to shoot explosive red energy. However, when he eats chocolate he soon turns into a midget, rapidly-melting version of himself.
  • The Reveal: This episode reveals that Ruel owns a mansion with a gigantic vault full of treasures.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: By the end of the episode, Gonnard is locked in a glass bottle in the middle of Ruel's treasury. And I Must Scream punishment with a dose of Laser-Guided Karma however.
