Recap / Voyagers S 1 E 6 Cleo And The Babe

Go To

Bogg and Jeffrey find themselves tasked with helping Cleopatra escape an assassination attempt after Caesar is murdered by the Roman Senate. However, matters get complicated when Cleopatra accidentally touches the omni while kissing Bogg and subsequently gets away from him in New York City. While there, Jeffrey notices another problem — Yankee Stadium is missing because Babe Ruth never became the home run king he was in history.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: While trying to cheer up/distract Jeffrey, Bogg lists three examples of Manly Tears occurring during history: Napoleon at Waterloo, George Washington at Valley Forge, and General Eisenhower at Bunker Hill. Jeffrey, as intended, reacts in surprise, knowing that the third is inaccurate.
  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: During the episode, Cleopatra runs around Prohibition-era New York with gangsters and meets Babe Ruth, while speaking perfect English.
  • Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: Cleopatra protests the slave's robe Bogg and Jeff throw over her to disguise her while they escape, despite the fact that she's now a target for the Roman Senate if she's recognized.
  • Eternal English: Despite having lived a long time ago and very far away from where English began as a language, Cleopatra has no trouble speaking it well enough to fit in in 1920s New York.
  • Historical Domain Character: Cleopatra, Babe Ruth, Ed Barrow, Lucky Luciano and Mark Antony appear in the episode.
  • It's Okay to Cry: Jeff tears up when seeing Yankee Stadium, where his late father used to take him, but tries to hide it, telling Bogg that crying is a "sissy" thing for a man to do. Bogg contradicts this, even offering three examples from history (though the last was purposely incorrect).
  • Meaningful Echo: Jeffrey keeps protesting that they need to ensure Babe Ruth's rise as a baseball star in spite of Bogg's belief that catching up to Cleopatra and putting her back in her proper time is more important. At the end of one argument, Bogg tells Jeffrey that baseball is only a sport. A few minutes later, Jeffrey holds up an apple like the one they just used to help Isaac Newton discover gravity and tells him it's just an apple.
  • Men Don't Cry: At one point, Jeffrey tears up at seeing Yankee Stadium, as he used to go there with his father. He tells Bogg he doesn't want to be seen like this as crying is "sissy" for a man.
