"I think it wants us to smile."

"This will perhaps be the most defining moment in our history. The day humankind reaches beyond its home world to help the immense universe of which we inhabit such a small part."
Sam

The Galaxy Garrison prepares to launch Voltron and the Atlas into space to fight the Galra. Shiro encourages the Garrison to spend their last night with their loved ones. Lance asks Allura to have dinner with him and his family; the girls take Allura shopping for an outfit while Lance seeks Coran's approval. Keith also encourages Lance.

Meanwhile, the Altean pilot — a member of the colony named Luca — awakens. Luca accuses Romelle of betraying the colony for Voltron and aiding them in killing their "savior" Lotor. Luca flatlines as she reveals Honerva is plotting something.

Allura meets Lance's family. On a walk after dinner, Allura uses her powers to revive a beautiful garden, and admits that she is uncertain about her future. Lance tells her that he loves her, and they kiss.

The pilots prepare to blast off in the Atlas, assuring the people of Earth that they will return triumphant.

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Personality Change: In-Universe, by way of Recursive Canon. The original Voltron anime is a show In-Universe. In it, Keith is far friendlier, and Coran is more serious.
  • Aspect Ratio Switch: As the original anime was done in 4:3, this also applies to the footage of the show when seen at the beginning of the episode. With the prerequisite black bars added to the sides when the camera zooms out into Pidge's room.
  • Big Damn Kiss: Lance and Allura share one.
  • Chain of Deals: Downplayed, but the rare video game that Pidge trades her first autograph for is the only thing the proprietor of the clothing store is willing to trade the dress (that Allura wants for her date) for. On another note, since all previous governments have apparently collapsed, there has not yet been any reestablishment of formal currency and as such all shopping is done through trading physical goods or services.
  • Costume-Test Montage: Romelle, Pidge, Rizavi, and Leifsdottir each make Allura try on an outfit.
  • Gender Flip: Also in-universe with the Voltron anime which made Pidge a boy.
  • Love Confession: Lance to Allura.
Lance: I don't care if this is only our first date. Allura, I love you. I have for a long time. I wanna be your family. Earth can be your home, or anywhere you wanna go. It doesn't matter. I will follow you across the universe.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Katie's appearance after the brief makeover at the mall makes her identical to the Pidge from the original Voltron.
    • During the Shopping Montage, Allura briefly gets into a pink jumpsuit similar to her original outfit.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Even though Pidge rescued her brother and father and was fighting a intergalactic war, Pidge's mother grounds her for running away from home.
  • Promoted to Love Interest: In-Universe, by way of Recursive Canon. The original Voltron anime — which has Keith and Allura as the Official Couple, unlike Legendary Defender where they are just friends — is an actual show in-universe. Lance bemoans this fact.
  • She Knows Too Much: Honerva kills Luca before she can reveal anything really important. Unfortunately for her the Paladins now know she’s behind the mech attack.
  • Shipper on Deck: Romelle and Hunk both express approval at Lance and Allura going on a date.
  • Shopping Montage: The girls go to a mall; Pidge picks up a bunch of items by impersonating her TV show counterpart, and they help Allura select an outfit for her dinner date.
  • Work Off the Debt: The alien clothing shop proprietor uses this as their preferred means of customer payment.
  • You Are Not Alone: Allura is saddened by the fact that the other paladins have homes and families to return to, while she has none. Lance drops this trope (and a Love Confession) afterwards.
