"Why haven't we heard from Pidge?"

Pidge tries to contact the Voltron Coalition, to no avail. The group figures out that with their current resources, the return trip to Earth will take a 1.5 Earth years. The group sets out, but their riding arrangements prove less than satisfactory. They check in at a Blade of Marmora outpost, only to find it abandoned, and they are attacked by a small Galra fleet using weapons and tactics they hadn't yet encountered. Backed into a corner, the paladins fly into a cyclone and take cover on a dangerous ice planet. They eventually manage to shake their assailants, but are captured by Lotor's ex-generals.

Tropes:

  • Aerial Canyon Chase: Keith leads the team through one on the canyons on the ice planet, with the fighter planes behind them being taken out by geysers and exploding debris.
  • Carry the One: Coran says this while calculating the time it'll take to return to Earth. When his initial estimate is wrong (by several orders of magnitude), he says he forgot to carry the three.
  • Deus Exit Machina: The wolf uses its teleportation powers to help fend of the fighters chasing Pidge, but gets injured in the process preventing it from using its powers to easily resolve the next episode's plot.
  • Fox-Chicken-Grain Puzzle: Coran seems to be setting up a variant of this in his head when discussing on how to transport the cow, the wolf and the mice, but it's quickly pointed out this isn't really an issue that applies to this situation.
Coran: Well, the Wolf can't go with Kaltenecker, wolves eat cows. And the cow can't be in the same area as the mice because aren't cows afraid of mice?
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Hunk's bayard evolves into one with separate automated shooters just in time for him to take out the fighter plan that's cornered him.
  • Plot Hole: Where was Kaltenecker the whole time? The whole team consisted of 15 characters: the five Paladins, Krolia, Coran, Shiro, the mice, the Time Wolf, Romelle, and Kaltenecker. All of them except the cow were accounted for. This is particularly jarring since early on in the episode her existence was acknowledged in the discussion of who goes with who. Though one could Hand Wave it by saying that she could have been in any of the Lions' cargo hold and simply been ignored due to her docile nature.
  • Terrible Artist: Coran attests Allura is one. In her youth, an attempt at drawing her grandmother ended in a drawing that resembled a weird alien creature.
  • What Does This Button Do?: To Lance's frustration, Romelle can't help but poke around the Red Lion's cockpit and ask about its functions.
  • Worf Had the Flu: The team has trouble with a small fleet of Galra fighters because the Lions aren't flying at full power.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Invoked. Lance says this after Romelle presses something that causes goop to fall all over his face.
