Recap / Voltron: Legendary Defender S2E9 "The Belly of the Weblum"

Go To

The team decides to split up in order to get the materials needed to take Zarkon down. Keith and Hunk are assigned to find the Weblum, a creature that creates a crystal that they need for the teleduv. When the two get separated Keith comes across a stranger who has a Galra mark on their body.

Tropes for this episode include the following:

  • Back-to-Back Badasses: The Mystery Galra and Keith do this in order to keep the bacteria from latching onto them.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Lance does this after he explains their plan for Zarkon, when he grabs the screen at one point and gives a grin towards the audience.
  • Brutal Honesty: Hunk, after his Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap! moment, admits that Allura probably hates Keith.
  • Call-Back: Coran mentioned in season one that retrieving a Balmeran crystal is nothing, and that harvesting scaultrite from a Weblum is infinitely more dangerous.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Keith explicitly says that he's relying on Hunk's expertise to help him and even cracks a joke about it.
  • Debate and Switch: Keith keeps asking Hunk not to treat him differently since he only just found he is Galra, and that he's the same person. Hunk during the episode points out that Keith has become a better person since learning his identity. This gets pushed to the back as a Running Gag.
  • Delayed "Oh, Crap!": Hunk manages to get the Weblum's attention by making his lion headbutt it and it prepares to fire its laser in defense. Hunk beams proudly since that means it would create the scaultrite, but then belatedly remembers that the beam was aimed at him.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Invoked when Keith calls out Hunk for asking him uncomfortable questions about his Galra heritage, since he just found out.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Hunk tries to reassure Keith that Allura doesn't hate him for being Galra. He then states that the Galra wiped out her home planet and people, finally admitting that Allura probably hates him.
  • Fantastic Racism: Allura treats Keith coldly after finding out he's of Galra lineage and refuses to acknowledge his presence.
  • Foreshadowing: Keith has an Enemy Mine with a Galra, who betrays the group at the very end and takes some of the scaultrite at gunpoint. SOMETHING is up with that person.
  • Friendly Enemy: The Galra that Keith saved looks like they're going to shoot him, but actually take out three of the jellyfish-creatures that were headed his way. Keith decides it would be better if they kept their gun.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Keith uses his shield more than he normally would in this episode to protect himself and the Galra he saves.
  • Missing Steps Plan: The video Coran gives Hunk and Keith is so old it cuts off at random points about the dangers of the Weblum and how to avoid danger. By the time Keith manages to find some of the missing bits, they already failed one of the most important steps.
  • Motivational Kiss: Lance asks Allura for one, Coran holds up Platt for Lance to kiss instead.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: Hunk questions Keith for saving the stranger, but Keith reasons that Galra or not, as a Paladin he couldn't just leave them inside the Weblum.
  • Running Gag: Hunk keeps commenting on how he likes "Galra-Keith" better than "regular Keith".
  • Shout-Out: The green jellyfish-like creatures strongly resemble Metroids, down to latching on victim's heads and harming them.
  • Silent Antagonist: The Galra Keith saves, he even lampshades it by telling Hunk that they don't talk much.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Keith is notably more gentle towards Hunk and even makes a joke at his expense. Hunk lampshades this as they're headed back to the castle after getting the scaultrite.
  • We Need a Distraction: Hunk swims outside of the Weblum and draws its fire with the Yellow Lion so that Keith can harvest the scaultrite.
