Recap / Veronica Mars S03E04 "Charlie Don't Surf"

Go To

Nighttime in the Mars Apartment, and Keith is preparing dinner for himself, Veronica and Logan. Veronica is not happy about this, and when Logan comes to the door and Veronica pulls him outside, we find out why. She doesn't want him to make any jokes to Keith, particularly about her having sex with Logan. Logan promises to be on his best behavior. At dinner, though, Veronica is anxious enough that she keeps trying to deflect the conversation from any touchy subjects, including when Logan brings up how reporters are still calling him for interviews, even though he doesn't want to do it. Even when Keith asks Logan what hobbies he enjoys ("Surfing"), Veronica tries to stop the questions, and Keith looks frustrated.

The next day, Veronica goes to Mac and Parker's room. Parker answers the door, wearing a much better wig than her mother picked out for her, and coldly tells Veronica that Mac is in Bakersfield for her great-aunt's funeral. She shuts the door, but when Veronica continues to knock, and sticks her foot in the door when Parker tries to close it again, Parker reluctantly invites her in. Parker bitterly repeats her accusation that Veronica thought she was a whore. Veronica says she knows what that's like; Parker snorts that Veronica couldn't possibly know what she's feeling, which is when Veronica reveals she knows *exactly* how Parker feels. Parker, thrown, said she didn't realize, and Veronica says she doesn't like to talk about it, but she's willing to try and nail Parker's rapist. Before Parker can respond to that, there's a knock on the door. It's Nish, and she and Veronica eye each other disdainfully until Veronica leaves and Nish goes inside. Once inside, Nish tries to interview Parker about the rape. Parker doesn't want to talk, and Nish says she understands, but wants to know if she remembers any Pi Sigs at the party she attended that night.

Meanwhile, in Logan's hotel suite, Logan's accountant Avi Kaufman (Cliff Weissman) tells Logan he'll burn out the first tier of his trust fund two-and-a-half years ahead of schedule at the rate he's going. Logan, in turn, feels someone's taking money out of his fund, and wants to talk to his lawyer about it. Kaufman, in turn, says he'll send all of the financial records to Logan.

A little later, Logan brings Veronica back to his room, and tells her the story. Veronica says Keith's accountant is perfect for this kind of work, but Logan thinks he needs a private detective. Veronica starts to say it's no problem until she sees at least ten boxes of files.

Meanwhile, at Mars Investigations, Harmony Chase (Laura San Giacomo) comes in and greets Keith; he remembers her from a judge's Christmas party he would see her at every year, and she remembers him changing her tire one time. She tells Keith she thinks her husband is cheating on her; she knows she's in a loveless marriage, and was willing to have that because her husband is a fantastic father, but now she's getting suspicious because he's been working late nights too often and taking mysterious trips.

Meanwhile, in the Hearst library, Wallace greets Veronica at work, and shows her an article in the school newspaper, which points out there was a Pi Sig party the night of each reported rape. Veronica is skeptical of Nish, but she admits she doesn't trust the Pi Sig guys either.

That night, Keith is exiting his apartment on his way for a stakeout when he sees Dick knocking on the door of the apartment next to them. Dick recognizes Keith and asks to see Veronica. Reluctantly, Keith lets him in. Veronica isn't enthused about seeing Dick, but tells Keith it's fine, and he leaves. Dick tells Veronica there's going to be a hearing to get the Pi Sigs kicked off of campus, and he and the others want Veronica to prove they had nothing to do with the rapes. Veronica points out the Pi Sigs disgust her, but Dick says they don't care about that, and they remember how she proved they didn't have anything to do with the rape in the spring, so they want her help. Veronica says she'll do it only if she gets paid $1500, if she gets full access to the fraternity and finds out everything that happened at the haunted house party where Claire got raped. She also wants Dick to leave before she changes her mind, which he does, but is happy she got access by invitation.

Meanwhile, Keith calls Harmony from his stakeout and tells her that her husband appears to be telling the truth about working late. Harmony is surprised by this, and mentions having followed her husband before. Keith smiles and they bid each other good night. Just then, a car pulls in front of the office building Keith is parked in front of, and he sees Harmony's husband (Marvin) get out with a woman. Keith sighs.

The next morning, both Veronica and Keith are surprised to see each other so nicely dressed (Veronica is wearing a pantsuit and sensible shoes, while Keith has on cologne), and Keith tells her his accountant should be done with Logan's files by the afternoon.

Later, at Mars Investigations, Harmony comes by with pizza. As they eat, he identifies the woman who dropped Marvin off at the office building as Carly (LeAnna Campbell). Harmony recognizes her as someone who works with a company whom Marvin does a lot of business with, and she's unsure of how to feel about this, especially since Keith tells her he only saw her dropping him off, and she's relieved it wasn't a cocktail waitress or something cliched like that. Keith then asks if Harmony can bug Marvin's tie for him.

Meanwhile, Veronica is at the Pi Sig house. She asks Chip for the whereabouts of every frat brother at the time of Claire's rape; when he protests she should be proving their innocence, she replies that's what she's doing. She also asks who was serving drinks, and he points her to Charleston (Parry Shen), though he warns her Charleston isn't that smart. Charleston, who's playing pinball, says he just poured soda into cups, and doesn't know anything. Veronica explains since he's the token minority (Chinese-American), he'll most likely be a suspect. As she's about to leave, Charleston stops his game and admits he went to Chip's room to bring up all the cash he had made (which they do every $500), but it was locked, he heard someone having sex, and when he knocked, Chip answered, looking sweaty. A frat brother then joins them and tells them there's a protest outside. Sure enough, when Veronica goes outside, she sees the Lilith House has led a group of women, including Parker, in a protest; they're holding up signs of previous victims (including Claire and Parker) and chanting slogans such as "No more rapes at Hearst; women's safety first". Parker blanches when she sees Veronica, and Dick comes out shirtless and puts his arm around Veronica, which Veronica is disgusted by.

Back at Mars Investigations, Keith is telling Harmony about his time as sheriff when Logan and Veronica come by. After Keith introduces them all, he tells Harmony he has to get back to work, and she says goodbye and leaves. Keith tells Logan according to his accountant, the money missing from Logan's trust fund is actually going towards Aaron's Kids, Aaron's charity. Logan and Veronica aren't very happy to hear this, and when Logan comes back a little later after getting food, Veronica tells him Aaron's charity was shut down years ago, and this is something else.

The next day, in the Hearst food court, Logan wonders if he should threaten Avi Kaufman, but Veronica tells him to hold off on it until she can get some more information. She does, however, invite Logan to watch while she puts the screws on Chip, who's getting food and whose hands are bruised. Chip admits at the haunted house they were at, some of the guys accidentally stomped on his hands, but he's more uncomfortable when Veronica asks who he was sleeping with that night, especially when he points out she'd never confirm it...

...and sure enough, when Veronica finds Charleston with his girlfriend Charlotte (Amy Rider) saying goodbye in the quad area a little later, Charlotte refuses to admit she was with Chip, and storms off. Dick walks up to Veronica and says she's making him look bad because she seems to be trying to prove their guilt, not their innocence. Veronica mentions Dick showing up at Logan's place feeling guilty about something he'd done, but Dick calls Logan "whipped" and storms off.

That night, at the Mars apartment, Veronica muses at the possibility of Dick being a rapist, but sets that thought aside to research Logan's problem. She finds a company called "Micardo Enterprise" and makes a phone call. A little later, Keith comes back from his stakeout, and Veronica reveals what she's discovered; Logan's business manager isn't embezzling money...

...and as she explains to a shocked Logan at his hotel suite sometime later, the money is going towards a brother Logan never knew existed. Veronica gives him the phone number, and while Logan is hesitant at first, when Veronica leaves he eventually calls his brother, named Charlie Stone, and leaves a message on his machine.

The next day, Veronica catches up to Parker as she walks to class. Parker, unsurprisingly, was not thrilled to see Veronica all buddy-buddy with Dick, and accuses Veronica of working for the Pi-Sigs. Veronica says she's using the access they're giving her to go after them, but Parker isn't impressed; she brings up Dick stopping by her room while she wasn't there, and mentions Dick chased one of her friends out of the haunted house and was screaming at her.

That night, Keith continues his surveillance of Marvin (Mark Ciarrochi) and Carly, who are talking business as they walk towards Carly's car. Marvin opens Carly's door, and she kisses him, which Keith photographs.

The next day, Veronica meets Nancy, who happens to be Claire's roommate. Nancy isn't thrilled to see Veronica, but admits she and Claire went to the haunted house because they heard there was a grope line set up by the frat boys, and she and Claire put rat traps on their private points, which explains the bruised hands (and Dick yelling at Nancy). Nancy admits she lost track of Claire after that, though she thought she saw her walking down the street later, but it wasn't her. She also says she told the sheriff all of this.

A little later, Veronica goes to a convenience store, owned by Walter (Lee Weaver), on the street where Claire might have been. Veronica shows Walter Claire's photo, and he confirms Claire was so drunk she could barely stand, and was with a guy who had to go to an ATM because he didn't have enough cash to pay for condoms.

That night, at his hotel suite, Logan is sitting with Charlie Stone (Matt Czuchry), and Charlie is telling how his mother, a flight attendant, met Aaron on a flight from L.A. to New York, they had a one-night stand, and Charlie didn't know who his real father was until his mother took him to see one of Aaron's movies when he was ten years old. Far from being upset - especially after his mom showed him the hush money, which admittedly allowed him to go to private schools - Charlie was happy he wasn't living Logan's life, and Logan confirms sometimes he wishes he wasn't either. Charlie looks at his watch and says he has papers to grade. As he and Logan are saying their goodbyes, Veronica comes in, and Logan introduces her to Charlie. As he gets ready to leave, Charlie mentions he's thinking of going surfing early the next morning, which Logan is happy to hear, but Veronica is less pleased to hear. She admits she could just be happy for Logan, or she could be her usual suspicious self...

...and the next day, Veronica is at the school where Charlie teaches. Sure enough, when she stops by the class, she meets the real Charlie Stone (Ryan Eggold). Veronica covers by saying she's looking for someone else, and leaves.

Logan and "Charlie" are surfing, and Logan is telling "Charlie" a story about Aaron's abusing him at Christmas one time because he had opened a present early. When they leave the water, Veronica greets them, and calls "Charlie" Norman Phipps, who's actually a writer for Vanity Fair. Logan looks shattered, and Norman twists the knife by asking for more details about the story Logan mentioned. Logan makes as if he's going to hit him, and Norman goads him to do it; Logan appears to back off, but then does hit him, and Veronica apologizes for not leaving it alone.

Meanwhile, Keith and Harmony are meeting in his office. Harmony is sad but not surprised to see the photograph of Marvin and Carly, but then Keith plays her the recording he made; turns out Marvin broke the kiss off, saying he couldn't because he had a wife and family, and requested to no longer work with Carly. Harmony leaves, and Keith sadly watches her. Veronica comes in and asks Keith if he can get her ATM photos.

That night, Veronica visits the Pi Sigs in front of the Ad building. She shows them the photo of a drunken Claire outside the ATM with a guy who isn't a member of the fraternity. Not only that, but it was taken two hours after their haunted house closed, and she still had her hair, so this proves the Pi Sigs are innocent. Chip and the others are happy, but Veronica isn't. As she turns, she sees Nish, Parker and Claire looking at her with disgust.

The next day, the real Charlie Stone tries to go to class, but there are reporters everywhere, asking him about his connection to Logan.

Meanwhile, in a campus building, Parker catches up to Veronica and sarcastically congratulates her for acquitting the Pi Sigs. She asks how Veronica can live with herself. A slightly angry Veronica points out she searches for the truth and punishing someone for a crime they didn't commit is wrong, especially since the real rapist is still out there. If she should want to punish anyone for the serial rapes occurring, it should be the guilty person; not an innocent. She walks off as Parker looks slightly chastened.

A little later, in the quad area, Logan catches up to Veronica. She mentions how she saw him on Larry King, and he admits he has no empathy for his brother. He asks Veronica to find Norman to get back the watch he gave him that belonged to his grandfather.

Veronica finds Norman in his hotel room. He doesn't apologize, mentioning Vanity Fair dropped the story when Logan gave his interview, and gives back the watch, but says the real Charlie didn't have anything to do with it - Norman trapped him down, but he wanted to stay anonymous - and Norman only got to Logan by tapping Charlie's phone.

That night, in his hotel suite, Veronica tells a chastened Logan the news, and Logan again tries to call Charlie, but only gets his machine again.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Continuity Snarl: The date Veronica gives to Parker as the night of Shelley Pomeroy's party isn't the same as the one she gave when she discovered she and Carmen didn't remember the same night.
  • Foreshadowing: The ATM photograph of Claire becomes important later, and this isn't the last of Maya, either.
  • Literary Allusion Title: The title of the episode comes from one of the most famous lines in Apocalypse Now.
  • Noodle Incident: Harmony calls Veronica the "liberator of lobsters"; Veronica cheerfully protests it was only one, but we don't hear anything more about it.
  • Shout-Out: When Logan comes to the door for dinner, he jokes, "You were expecting Sidney Poitier?"
    • Dick tells Veronica, "You get to be the spy who loves me".
    • The pinball machine Charleston is playing on has a Baywatch theme.
    • When Dick sees the Lilith House protesters, he says to Veronica, "They're here."
    • When Logan sneaks up behind Veronica as she's walking, she squeals, "Hey, careful, man, there's a beverage here!"
    • Harmony Chase's name is a complex one with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That show had a character named Harmony Kendall, and another named Cordelia Chase. Cordelia was played by Charisma Carpenter, who played Kendall on VM.
    • Avi Kaufman is a similar name to Avy Kaufman, a well-known Hollywood casting agent.
