Episode number: 2

Countertop Intro

Bob and Larry are on the countertop again, before Bob remarks that the other day, he met up with a boy named Marco. Bob explains that when Marco's little sister apologizes for making him mad, his mother says that Marco needs to forgive her. The question is, "Why do I have to forgive?" Larry considers this a good question, and decides to tell Marco the story of "The Grapes of Wrath", about some very cranky grapes.

The Grapes of Wrath

Down a winding road, a family of ill-tempered grapes, consisting of Pa Grape, Ma Grape, and their children, Tom and Rosie Grape, drive down the road while singing about their reputation of being grumpy and sour. Their car suddenly hits a stump, which sends Tom and Rosie tumbling across the ground. The two start insulting each other, before the entire family notices Junior Asparagus standing off to the side. When they try to figure out what Junior is, they guess that he is a bean, as well as mistaking his trademark yellow cap for cheese.

Junior explains to the Grapes that he is not a bean, he is an asparagus, and the "cheese" is actually a hat. However, his hat suddenly falls off, exposing the top of his head. The Grapes burst into laughter, thinking that Junior has peas on his head. Junior starts crying, and Dad Asparagus comes outside to investigate. When Junior explains what happened, Dad Asparagus then explains to the Grapes that when we make fun of others, it makes them feel bad, before also explaining to them that God wants us to forgive others. The Grapes then feel bad for making fun of Junior.

Dad Asparagus tells Junior to forgive the Grapes, clarifying that when others apologize for what they did, God wants us to forgive them. Junior forgives the Grapes after that, but when Dad calls Junior by his name, Tom and Rosie then start teasing Junior once again, angering Junior. Junior is about to confront the Grapes, when he accidentally steps on a rake that hits him in the face. He falls back into his dump truck, down the hill and into the sandbox, covered in sand. Tom and Rosie laugh at him again. Dad hears all the racket, telling the Grapes that he thought that they weren't going to tease anymore.

When Pa Grape says that Grapes always keep their promise and asks Tom and Rosie if they agree, they both agree rather reluctantly, apologizing to Junior once again. Junior is reluctant to forgive the Grapes again because they made fun of his name and his misfortune. Throughout the segment, Bob and Larry interact with the story, explaining to Junior that God wants us to forgive others for wrongdoing of any kind. When Junior asks how many time he's supposed to forgive, Bob and Larry consult Qwerty, who gives them the verse "Jesus answered, "I tell you not seven times, but seventy times seven." Matthew 18:22".

Bob and Larry don't know what seventy times seven is, but Rosie Grape is able to correctly guess the answer, which is 490. Because of that, Junior forgives the Grapes again. Pa says they shouldn't be called 'the Grapes of Wrath' anymore, and Dad suggests 'the Grapes of Math' since Rosie has quite a head for numbers. The Grapes drive off down the road again, but this time to share their new found kindness with everyone around them. After the story ends, Bob compliments Larry's story, and asks if that's how the story goes, to which Larry then replies "Oh, yeah" and winks at the viewer.

Intermission

Scallion #1 is acting as a salesman, presenting the audience to a brand new product called the Forgive-O-Matic, which ostensibly allows God to forgive you for all the bad things you've ever done. It even comes with a lovely collection of Ginsu Steak Knives.

Junior then appears in front of Scallion #1 and explains that the Bible says that God forgives us for all that we've done. Scallion #1 is surprised that anyone can forgive without the use of a Forgive-O-Matic, so he tries other uses for the Forgive-O-Matic, such as making french fries or trying to sell a chia look-a-like of the Forgive-O-Matic. Junior then says "Say good night, Gracie", which Scallion #1 then responds "Good night, Gracie" as the lights then go out, before he trips in the dark.

Larry's Lagoon

Bob and Larry remember the time that they learned about forgiveness, before they tell the story about their cruise on the ocean, in a parody of Gilligan's Island, with Larry as "a mighty sailor man" and Bob as the Skipper, who is "brave and sure". The two of them, who are running a tour-boat service, greet their passengers, the Professor (played by Dad Asparagus), the millionaire (played by Archibald Asparagus), and his wife, Lovey. Soon, the cruise is underway as Bob and Larry comment on how beautiful the day is. Bob goes to see how the passengers are doing, so he entrusts Larry at the wheel and warns him not to daydream.

Larry is now steering the boat, and he daydreams about being a master captain, who can pilot ships through ice with ease. His mission is to save a pair of whales. However, Bob shows up just as Larry's daydream ends. Larry explains what he's about to do, Bob points out there are no icebergs in the area, and Larry inadvertently crashes the boat into a rock, sending the passengers tumbling onto an island. After the incident is over, Bob and the other passengers are angry at Larry for sinking the boat.

That night, everyone has built some huts out of bamboo and palm leaves for them to sleep in, but they are still mad at Larry for what happened. While Larry comments that it's not so bad being stranded on a tropical island, Bob disagrees, saying that their boat is at the bottom of the ocean with no way for them to escape. When Larry insists that he's sorry, Bob indignantly replies that it's not good enough before going to sleep. This causes Larry to think that Bob thinks that he's not good enough. Because of that, Larry then decides to run away from the island.

The next morning, Archibald and Lovey wonder where Skipper is, before they hear Bob calling out if anyone has seen Larry. Bob is up in a palm tree, looking for Larry. The Professor has an idea on how to escape from the island, using a catapult. When the Professor demonstrates with a coconut, the catapult then flings the coconut, knocking Bob out of the tree and crushing Archibald and Lovey's bamboo house. Archibald angrily blames Bob for destroying their house while Bob angrily blames the Professor for hitting him with a coconut. When the Professor apologizes for hitting Bob with the coconut, Bob forgives him, and Bob apologizes to Archibald and Lovey for what happened to their house, to which they forgive him as well. Bob and the others realize that they made a terrible mistake for not forgiving Larry, so they go off into the forest to find him.

At the other side of the island, Bob spots Larry attempting to leave the island on a raft. When Bob calls out to Larry to come back, Larry yells back, "You guys don't like me anymore! So I'm just gonna leave!" Archibald says that they do like him and that they forgive him for smashing the boat, and Bob tells Larry that they realize now that it was wrong of them not to forgive him. Larry forgives them. A palm tree named Palmy shows up, happy to see the reconciliation. Palmy starts to sing "The Forgiveness Song", which is about how when we forgive others, we can live in harmony. The Professor shows up in a helicopter fashioned out of bamboo and coconuts, then the others then climb on after that. Once everyone is aboard the helicopter, they fly off and leave the island.

Countertop Outro

Back on the countertop, Bob and Larry talk about how they've learned a lot about forgiveness, and Larry keeps talking about bamboo to Bob's annoyance. The "What Have We Learned" song plays.

After the song ends, Bob and Larry then review the lessons that they've learned about forgiveness. Qwerty gives another verse, which is, "Forgive others as the Lord forgave you. Colossians 3:13b." Bob answers that that's why we need to forgive. Bob and Larry sign off, ending the episode.

Character Introductions: Pa Grape, Ma Grape, Tom Grape, Rosie Grape, Lovey Asparagus

Tropes:

  • Adapted Out: Ginger and Mary Ann in the Gilligan's Island spoof. There were very few female characters on the show at the time and there wasn’t enough money to model new ones, so this was probably justified. This was even lampshaded by Bob and Larry. According to them, they cancelled.
  • An Aesop:
    • When somebody sincerely apologizes, we have to accept their apology and forgive them.
    • Everybody makes mistakes sometimes, but you still need to try to fix the damage you caused.
  • Bamboo Technology: A literal example in "Larry's Lagoon", in which the Professor even goes so far as to make a helicopter entirely out of bamboo and coconuts.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Dad Asparagus in both sections. In the former, he comes down hard on the Grapes for their teasing of his son, teaches both parties the importance of apologies and forgiveness, and comes up with the Grapes' new name. In the latter, he uses a helicopter "made entirely of bamboo and coconuts" to get everyone off the island.
  • But Wait, There's More!: The Scallion in the "Forgive-O-Matic" segment says this word-for-word right before announcing the Steak Knives. He also continues to more and more desperately utilize this trope after Junior tells him his product is a complete sham.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: There is no Silly Song in this episode, as Phil Vischer intended it to be a one-off concept. Instead the intermission skit is a mock advertisement for a "Forgive-O-Matic". When viewers complained about the lack of a Silly Song segment, it was brought back as a permanent addition to the show.
  • Heel–Face Turn: When the Grapes family learn about forgiveness from Dad Asparagus, and that people can be forgiven 490 times, they decide to be nice from now on, and become the Grapes of Math due to Rosie being an expert on math, particularly her equation of seventy times seven.
  • Homage: "Larry's Lagoon" is one to Gilligan's Island.
  • Humiliation Conga: Junior ends up suffering from one of these in "The Grapes of Wrath". First he gets hit in the face by a rake, then he falls backwards into a toy dump truck which then rolls downhill, before it hits the side of a sandbox, which then sends Junior flying into the air, before he then falls into the sandbox afterwards.
  • I Am Not Weasel: The Grapes mistake Junior for a bean and his yellow hat for cheese, which bothers him. When he takes his hat off they also think his hair is peas.
  • Inherently Funny Word: Larry quite enjoys saying the word "bamboo."
  • In Name Only: "The Grapes Of Wrath" has nothing to do with the novel of the same name; rather, it's about a family of mean-spirited Grapes. This is even lampshaded by Bob when he asks Larry if that's really how the story goes.
  • Literal-Minded: Though obviously tongue in cheek, Bob, Larry and the players in "The Grapes of Wrath" take the quote from Matthew 18:22, "I tell you not seven times, but seventy times seven" and conclude that it means you have to literally forgive someone 490 times.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Whether or not you thought Bob and the other passengers were a bit harsh to Larry for stranding them on the island, it's hard to blame them for their anger, especially since Larry promised not to daydream when he took the ship's helm. Furthermore, even though the lesson was about forgiveness, Larry constantly apologizing wasn't really doing anything to remedy the fact that they were marooned on the island.
  • Jerkass Realization: The rest of the folks stranded have this when they realize why Larry ran away.
  • Naturally Huskless Coconuts: On the island, huskless coconuts are seen growing on palm trees. When Palmy starts singing "The Forgiveness Song", the two coconuts growing on his branches join in.
  • Oh, Crap!: Bob and Larry both get this reaction in "Larry's Lagoon" when they see that their boat is about to run into a rock.
  • Papa Wolf: Dad Asparagus when he calls out the Grapes of Wrath for making fun of Junior. Larry's narration overbears Dad's dialogue, but you can tell from the facial expressions and inflections that he's furious.
  • Rake Take: Happens to Junior in "The Grapes of Wrath" when he tries to confront them for making fun of his name.
  • Second Episode Introduction: This second video marks the debut of the Grapes, particularly Pa Grape.
  • Snake Oil Salesman: The announcer in "The Forgive-O-Matic", who sells an item that has a completely useless purpose, for forgiving yourself—something God can already do for you at no cost. Junior calls him out with no hesitation.
  • Tempting Fate: When the gang is shipwrecked on an island in "Larry's Lagoon" after Larry accidentally smashed the boat into a rock.
Larry: I'm sorry? At least the boat's still floating. [The boat immediately sinks.]
  • Thing-O-Matic: The Forgive-O-Matic.
  • Tropical Island Adventure: Bob, Larry, the Professor, the millionaire, and his wife all get stranded on a Deserted Island full of palm trees and bamboo.
  • We Are Not Going Through That Again: When Bob and Larry are about to board the helicopter...
    Larry: Hey, Bob?
    Bob: Yeah, Larry?
Larry: Um, next summer, let's just sell lemonade, like everyone else.
Bob: That sounds like a good idea.
  • Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises: Bob and Larry when they scream as they realize the boat is about to crash into the rock.
