Recap / Veep S 6 E 8 Judge

Go To

Team Selina heads to Gary's Alabama home to celebrate his birthday, as Selina promised. Selina immediately starts using the event as an excuse to court an important politician's support, while Gary has to deal with his borderline abusive father. Amy and Mike also run into a snag, as they find that Mike misplaced his journal somewhere on his journey to Alabama.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Affectionate Parody: Judge's Armored Closet Gay situation is one of Brokeback Mountain - a married gay man too scared to come out in his society, but whose constant "fishing trips" with his close male friend clue in the savvy. The parody comes in that it's blindingly obvious to everyone what's going on, and that he's had multiple close male friends instead of just one, making it even more clear.
  • Boomerang Bigot: Judge's fear of being outed makes him quick to accuse things of not being manly enough, and even using "queer" in a derogatory way.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Gary does this to his father after one insult too many.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • The whole episode is Selina progressively doing this to Gary, as she gradually uses everything in his life and at his own birthday party to serve her own interests.
  • Last-Second Word Swap: Gary calling out Judge.
Gary: You are a great, big, flaming bully!
  • Oblivious to Hints:
    • Gary apparently has no idea that Judge is transparently gay, and even when he reaches a breakthrough veers away from acknowledging it.
  • Selective Obliviousness: At episode's end, it's implied that Gary's mom knows what's going on with Judge but doesn't want to talk about it.
  • Transparent Closet:
    • Judge, Gary's father. Selina and Amy can tell within fifteen seconds of meeting him, as can every other rational adult.
  • Wham Episode:
    • This episode features a big one - Mike left the Meyer campaign journal on Leon West's desk, meaning Leon now has access to everything the Meyer campaign has lied about.
    • This episode also reveals a lot of why Gary acts how he does, with a far from ideal home life.
