Ultraman faces the Chief of the Monsters

(First Aired: March 26, 1967)

Screenplay by: Tetsuo Kinjo

Directed by: Kazuho Mitsuta

Science Patrol is called to a department store when a monster is sighted there. Upon arriving, they find the monster in question is friendly, little Pigmon, who has somehow returned to life after being killed by Red King on Tatara Island! Pigmon is constantly barking and shrieking out loud like it is trying to tell Science Patrol something concerning. Science Patrol decides to take the little monster to headquarters, away from the monster-fearing populace. At headquarters, Science Patrol decides to have Dr. Gonda, a scientist studying animal languages, translate what Pigmon is trying to tell them. Dr. Gonda works industriously day and night, slowly translating the monster's language.

Meanwhile, Ide has been behind in his weapon repairs and worn out from constructing a monster translation device. The good news is that Dr. Gonda is almost complete in his work, but Ide hasn't finished the translation machine yet. Seeing that Ide is unnaturally down, Hayata decides to talk to him. In Ide's workshop, Hayata is told by his teammate that he feels that Science Patrol and his inventions are worthless because of how Ultraman is always the hero who defeats the monsters and saves the day in the end. Hayata reassures Ide that Ultraman is a genuine ally of Science Patrol, who only comes when Science Patrol has fought to their limits and all seems hopeless, and there are many times where Ultraman couldn't done it without the assistance of Science Patrol. Ide, although still not fully convinced by Hayata's speech, feels a little better and works long into the night to finish his translation device.

At Dr. Gonda's lab, Pigmon is acting even more panicky than before, shrieking hysterically about something very bad that is happening right now. The event in question is the reappearance of two monsters in the mountains - Dorako (now without hook-hands or wings) and Telesdonnote . The two creatures battle each other in the dead of night, but a mysterious rumbling roar echoes from the mountains as if to tell them something. Responding to the mystery noise, Dorako and Telesdon break off their fight to await further orders from their mysterious master.

The following morning, Dr. Gonda brings Pigmon to Science Patrol HQ and Ide readies the translator. Pigmon speaks into it and the machine, using the data from Dr. Gonda's work, gives out the message - Geronimon, the Chief of the Monsters, has declared war on humankind and Ultraman, and in five hours, he will resurrect an army of 60 monsters to destroy the world! At that point, Science Patrol realizes that Pigmon must have been one of the monsters resurrected by Geronimon, but the Monster Chief was unaware of the human-loving Pigmon's true allegiances. With that, Science Patrol heads out with Pigmon to locate where the monster army will be assembling.

Out in the mountains on the Jet V-TOL, Science Patrol finds Dorako and Telesdon (the only two monsters to have been brought back by Geronimon so far). Science Patrol lands in a safe location and splits up. Hayata and Ide go after Dorako, while Muramatsu, Arashi, and Fuji target Telesdon. Telesdon is taken down very quickly by the trio, but Hayata and Ide have more trouble with Dorako, especially since Ide is more concerned about when Ultraman will arrive to save the day, to Hayata's annoyance. Dorako's arm is injured by a well-aimed shot from Hayata and the furious monster attempts to kill the two humans while Ide continues to do nothing but call out for Ultraman to come and defeat the monsters for Science Patrol. Pigmon comes in to rescue the humans by distracting Dorako, which works. However, Dorako kills Pigmon by squashing the little monster with its remaining good arm. A furious Hayata berates Ide for his uselessness in crying for Ultraman's help, which has cost Pigmon its life in protecting humanity, so Ide makes up for it by blowing Dorako up with his new Spark Bomb! Even with Dorako and Telesdon dead, the final challenge is soon to arrive.

Geronimon bursts from the mountainside, now having to take matters into his own hands. The Monster Chief resembles a dinosaur with an headdress of feathers and a beard (like a real chief) and he attacks Science Patrol with a blast of levitation gas from his mouth, rendering the team helpless. Hayata escapes the blast though and uses the opportunity to become Ultraman! He saves the team and battles Geronimon, facing down a flurry of feather darts before tearing out all of the Monster Chief's feathers. He soon overpowers Geronimon by using his Ultra Barrier to reflect the Monster Chief's levitation gas. With Geronimon helpless, Ide fires a powerful blast from his gun, destroying the Monster Chief and restoring Ide's drive to protect the Earth alongside Ultraman! With the day saved, Science Patrol regathers to pay their respects to the late Pigmon, for if it were not for the little hero, the day would never have been saved.

Tropes:

  • Bittersweet Ending: Ultraman and Science Patrol were able to foil Geronimon's plot to resurrect 60 monsters to destroy the world, but Pigmon sacrificed its life so that it could happen.
  • Double-Meaning Title: The title of the episode refers to Pigmon and Ide, the former for its Heroic Sacrifice and the latter for regaining his drive to protect Earth and destroying Dorako and Geronimon.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Geronimon's plot probably could have gone undiscovered if he didn't revive Pigmon, who immediately went to Science Patrol to warn them of the Monster Chief's plan.
  • Traumatic Haircut: Ultraman tears out all of Geronimon's feathers, preventing the Monster Chief from using them as Feather Flechettes.
  • Villain Decay: Telesdon's original appearance showed it to be The Juggernaut and shrugged off all attempts to harm it from the military. Here, it was introduced fighting a losing battle against Dorako, and ended up being taken out easily by a combined shot from Muramatsu, Arashi and Fuji's Super Guns.
