Recap / Ultra Despair Girls

Go To

Acting on a tip from the former Warriors of Hope, Komaru and Toko confront Monaka on her role in the Final Killing Game.

  • Anti-Climax Boss: Monaca. Komaru and Toko don't even get to fight her directly, and she spends the latter half of the episode dropping exposition before going off into space.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Komaru and Toko when they're surrounded by Monaka's robots. But before any fighting can occur, Monaka gives up and destroys the robots.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Komaru is able to control multiple Monokumas at once with Link bullets, which was impossible even before Nagito "balanced" the Hacking Gun.
  • Genre Savvy: Doubling as Breaking the Fourth Wall, Monaca realizes that, since she is a villain on the side of despair, she will naturally lose.
  • Hazy-Feel Turn: Monaca call it quits from the Hope vs. Despair battle after realizing how it can consume a person's life and mentality.
  • Lovely Angels: Komaru and Touko.
  • NEET: Monaka announces that she's going to space to become one.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Nagito convinced Monaca to give up on both hope and despair just by being his normal creepy self, since being subject to his insane rambling day in and day out made her realize that she didn't want to end up as crazy as him.
  • One-Woman Army: Both Komaru and Touko are this. Together, an army of robots couldn't stop them.
  • Putting on the Reich: Monaka's speech at the beginning of the episode.
  • Red Herring: Monaka herself.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Monaca gives up and leaves the EARTH without fighting, being tired of the entire battle.
  • Sequel in Another Medium: Essentially serves as a coda to the video game of the same name.
  • Sneeze Cut: Not a sneeze, but when Toko fantasizes about Byakuya, it cuts away to him, and he suddenly shudders in pure disgust as if he's aware of what she's doing.
  • The Reveal: Monaka reveals that she has nothing to do with setting up the Final Killing Game, but she did kill Gekkogahara, set up Asahina's Fake Kill Scare, and predicts that a survivor of the Killing School Life will die because of Makoto.
    • The Unreveal: She refuses to tell who is going to die by Makoto's actions and who is the actual killer, pretty much out of simply not wanting.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Monaka has become so disillusioned with Earth and the conflict between hope and despair that she decides to live in space.
