- Can't Take Criticism: Subverted. Sweet Tooth kidnaps people and forces them to watch his show but he only kills those who don't give him honest feedback. He spares Quiet and John after they tell him his show sucks.
- Commonality Connection: Sweet Tooth starts singing the "Thong Song" when he has John pinned up against a slot machine. When John joins in, Sweet Tooth strikes up a conversation with him about music and decides not to kill him.
- Curb-Stomp Battle: When John tries to fight Sweet Tooth directly, his punches completely fail to hurt him. Sweet Tooth then knocks John on his back with one punch.
- Flipping the Table: When John lies about loving Sweet Tooth's one man show, Sweet Tooth upends a table in a rage.
- Hypocritical Humor: Sweet Tooth introduces John to his best friend, a lunch sack named Harold. When John clarifies that the Evelyn he mentioned is a car, Sweet Tooth comments that it's weird that he talks to a car.
- Laser-Guided Amnesia: John reveals that his first memory is of waking up in his car with a head injury, and his only link to his past besides that is a faded family picture.
- Potty Failure: Sweet Tooth relates a story to John about when he shit his pants during a school play of Oklahoma!.
- Professional Butt-Kisser: John and Quiet are forced to watch an entire comedy set Sweet Tooth has planned, only for Sweet Tooth to come close to killing them when the former starts acting like this. It's only when Quiet admits that the set sucked and Doe follows does Sweet Tooth relent and eventually lets the pair go, admitting that he genuinely appreciated the criticism.
- The Pen Is Mightier: While hiding from Sweet Tooth, John tries to make a plan with Quiet to escape. Quiet instead stabs John in the back with a pen attached to a chain.
