Recap / Tuttle Twins S 1 E 11 Free Speech Freestyle

Go To

Summary: Karinne is back to causing trouble and this time she’s spreading lies about Ethan. But, with the help of James Madison, the Twins learn what happens when you restrict free speech even if it’s mean or deceptive.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • An Aesop: "You may not like the stuff they say, but protect all free speech anyway."
  • All Elections Are Serious Business: Karinne's parents invest as much into her campaign for kids club president as a career politician would for a local election, including commercials and billboards.
  • Brutally Honest: Emily complains that Mr. Megaphone's raps are dated and his rhymes are forced. Mr. Megaphone tells her she has the right to her opinion and he's not going to stop her from sharing it.
  • Call-Back: Ethan's campaign video mentions that he doesn't like pie—unless it's pizza.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Grandma Gabby getting arrested.
  • Freak Out: Ethan lets slip that the War of 1812 starts one year from when the Tuttles land in James Madison's time. Madison does not take it well.
  • Given Name Reveal: Gabby's full name is Gabriela Vela Nueve de los Santos Ron Pablo Jones.
  • Historical Domain Character: James Madison, fourth president of the United States and author of the Bill of Rights, explains the importance of keeping offensive speech legal.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Gabby keeps making short jokes at James Madison's expense, but she's not exactly pushing five feet herself.
  • Kick the Dog: Inverted. Karinne's parents promote the family dog over her as daughter of the year after she loses the kids club election.
  • Malicious Slander: Karinne tries to discredit Ethan's campaign by making up lies about him. Ethan and Emily initially want to find a way to force Karinne to stop her lies, but they learn that she has a right to them.
  • The Mole: Karinne turns out to be a junior agent for the Freedom and Regulation Team, which wants Gabby and her wheelchair.
  • Mood Whiplash: Gabby invites her friend Ha-Joon to join her and the twins at a concert in a dimension with anthropomorphic communication devices. On the way back, Gabby takes them all through North Korea so Ha-Joon can tell her story. The music gets very somber as Ha-Joon recounts her imprisonment and escape.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Ha-Joon is clearly intended to be a stand-in for real life North Korean defectors—most notably Yeonmi Park.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: Karinne's parents tell her that if she loses the kids club presidency to Ethan, she'll also lose her place as daughter of the year—to the family dog.
