Recap / Tuca And Bertie S 1 E 05 Plumage

Go To

Bertie decides to undergo a day of self-care which includes her apprenticeship at the bakery. Meanwhile, Tuca and Speckle go to visit the former's aunt Tallulah.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Actor Allusion: Bertie dancing in her apartment was loosely inspired by Ali Wong's tendency to post videos of herself dancing on Instagram.
  • Art Shift:
    • Bertie's description of "self-care Saturday" is illustrated in blue ink stick figures on a notebook paper background.
    • When Speckle reads the article about Tallulah in Tail & Feather magazine, the animation shifts to black-and-white.
    • Tuca's memories of her mom are done in a yarn-like style.
  • The Door Slams You: The creepy plumber winds up opening the front door right up in Bertie's face.
  • Fan Disservice: Bertie masturbating. It's not sexualized at all, more like a desperate attempt to regain control of her psyche after dealing with an entire day of unwanted attention from creepy men.
  • Fanservice: Bertie dancing in her underwear, meanwhile, is quite attractive.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • At one point, Tuca imagines riding Speckle like a horse while both of them are naked, alluding to her crush on him.
    • Bertie masturbating to purge her anxieties about being manhandled is the first sign that she's living with some sort of sexual trauma.
  • The Friends Who Never Hang: Lampshaded. It's acknowledged that this is the first time Tuca and Speckle have hung out on their own terms rather than as mutual friends of Bertie. They end up getting along like a house on fire.
  • Furry Confusion: Bernard is anthropomorphic, but his puppies are not.
  • Furry Reminder:
    • For an anthropomorphic dog, Bernard the butler is very dog-like in behavior.
    • Bertie scatters her feathers in the bathroom as she gets herself off.
  • Home Nudist: Tallulah has no qualms about being naked in front of Tuca and Speckle.
  • Nature Tinkling: At one point, Bernard urinates on a plant. He even lifts one leg and pants like a real dog as he does it.
  • Non-Mammal Mammaries: Speckle appears shirtless and is shown to have nipples.
  • Relative Button: Tuca was very devoted to her deceased mother. As such, the second Talulah says something negative about her, Tuca rips up her check and says she doesn't want Talulah helping her out financially anymore.
  • Running Gag: Tuca disposing of her drink in various spots. Also a defining moment for her, as it shows how dedicated she is to staying sober.
  • Spoonerism: Speckle does this while drunkenly listing off Tuca's odd jobs: "mobile notary, fortune walker, doggie tour guide, and noble motory."
  • Standard Snippet: Vivaldi's "Winter" plays during the Good-Times Montage at Tallulah's place.
  • Visual Pun: The handy man comes to fix a leak in the sink. Cue him pulling a green vegetable from the drain.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Subverted. Tuca and her aunt cracking mean-spirited jokes about one another, at first, just seems like good-natured ribbing. It eventually turns out to be a defense mechanism Tuca uses against Talulah's genuine verbal abuse, since she knows that Talulah will only be worse to her if she stands up for herself.
