Recap / Tuca And Bertie S 1 E 02 The Promotion

Go To

Bertie is seeking out a promotion at Conde Nest, but has to deal with her chauvinistic coworker Dirk.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bathroom Stall of Angst: Twice: the first time, Bertie goes into a stall because of Dirk's behaviour; the second time is when Tuca inadvertently sabotages her chances of getting a promotion.
  • Benevolent Boss: Despite being a bit of a Cloud Cuckoolander, Holland is shown to be very kind to his employees and does not hesitate to take action once Bertie tells him that Dirk sexually harassed her.
  • Cats Are Mean: Two of Bertie's coworkers are cats with obnoxious voices who tell her to be quiet when she's having a nervous breakdown in her cubicle. However, they both give Bertie genuine compliments about the flyer she makes for the sexual harassment seminar.
  • Continuity Nod: Tuca mentions Speckle eating his own grandmother in the previous episode.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: For breakfast, Tuca puts cereal, eggs, fish, and cake together in a blender, and then drinks the mixture, much to Speckle's disgust.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Bertie organizes a sexual harassment seminar at her office... and is dumbfounded when Dirk doesn't automatically feel wracked with guilt and confesses (granted, the HR woman is particularly bad at explaining sexual harassment). Similarly, none of the other women feel compelled to say anything about Dirk harassing them until Bertie leads by example.
    • In the end, Bertie gets her promotion and is initially thrilled... until Holland reminds her that being in a higher-powered position means she'll need to work later hours.
  • The Door Slams You: Tuca's beak momentarily gets stuck in a bathroom stall when Bertie opens the door up on her.
  • Furry Reminder:
    • Bertie literally shouts "Tweet! Tweet! Tweet!" to herself upon returning to her cubicle after Dirk talks over her during a meeting. And right after that, she runs into the bathroom and screams "Cloaca!"
    • As Tuca is handing out lunches in the office, one swan is seen regurgitating their lunch (including a fully formed cup of soda) into a co-worker's mouth in the background.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Tuca takes a temp job at Bertie's office to help get Dirk off her back so she can get a promotion, and is so popular there that she almost winds up getting the promotion Bertie wants.
  • High-Pressure Emotion: A tea kettle can be heard when Bertie snaps after finding out that nobody is taking the sexual harassment seminar seriously.
  • "Just Joking" Justification: Dirk tries to blow Bertie off with one of these.
  • Last-Second Word Swap: Speckle: "Text me when you get the good news, okay? And tonight maybe we can do some celebrating with my big di...nner idea."
  • Mood Whiplash: The montage of Tuca and Bertie making and confidently distributing flyers for their sexual harassment seminar, complete with pounding hip-hop music and the two of them making it "rain" flyers, is immediately followed by a Smash Cut to a dead quiet board room as the HR woman awkwardly tries and fails to explain sexual misconduct.
  • Mummy Wrap: Parodied when Tuca and Bertie entirely cover up two coworkers with sexual harassment seminar posters.
  • Noodle Incident: Bertie's boob mentions popping out before at a water park. There are even sound clips played as she reminisces over it.
  • Ocular Gushers: Bertie cries high-pressure tears when Tuca finds her miserable in a bathroom stall (and Tuca promptly whips out an umbrella).
  • Organ Autonomy: Bertie's own breast literally pops out of her chest and runs off to drink after Dirk sexually harasses Bertie.
  • Precision F-Strike: Bertie's unflattering description of Dirk in her Imagine Spot ends with him throws his arms up and announcing that he's going to go fuck himself.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: Bertie does this during a business pitch in her Imagine Spot.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Dapper T. Dog's letter to the editor:
"Dear editor of the Bird Town Gazette: foreseeing increased mobility issues, the black tar potholes on Beak Street have become untenable! As the owner of a vintage touring bicycle, I am endangered and frankly disturbed by the flippancy of our municipal pavers! As famed urbanist Elebert Whitscythe once said, 'roads are but the lymphatic system of the city.' So I urge you to repair Bird Town's concrete crevices post haste! Signed, Dapper T. Dog, fervent citizen velocipede."
  • Shout-Out
    • The heavenly choir which sings "TEMPLATES" every time Tuca's temp agents appear mirrors the one from the Spongebob Squarepants episode "Aargh!" where a heavenly choir randomly appears to sing certain lines.
    • There's another Spongebob reference in Bertie's Imagine Spot where the wall behind her is lined with nothing but "Employee Of The Month" photos of herself, not unlike the Krusty Krab in the episode "Employee Of The Month."
  • Two Words: I Can't Count: When Bertie asks how Tuca got two other temps to work for her, Tuca replies "Two words, Bertie: confidence!" Lampshaded by Bertie when she asks if her name was one of those two words.
  • Written Sound Effect:
    • Bertie's "IT WAS INAPPROPRIATE" ends up smacking Dirk in the face.
    • Dapper T. Dog's "AWOOOOOOO" during The Stinger ends up going through the potholes.
