- Bizarre Taste in Food: Played for Drama; Jim, who has always had a love for the culinary arts, can no longer stomach human food.
- Blessed with Suck: How Jim comes to see his transformation, At first the increased battle power of his troll hybrid form is seen as cool, but it quickly turns as Jim realizes he can no longer be in the sun, have any sort of normal life, and can't even have a nice meal with his mother.
- Blood Magic: Morgana's first act after being freed is she wipes out half of the Gumm-Gumm army so that she can use their remains to enact the Eternal Night.
- Disney Villain Death: Usurna is pushed into the swampy mire by her own subjects before sinking to its bottom.
- Even Evil Has Standards: Angor Rot is greatly disturbed by Morgana immediately killing half of the Gumm-Gumms for use in her Blood Magic.
- Half-Human Hybrid: Merlin claims that Jim is now half-human, half-troll in a manner different from changelings. With the exception of a few human-esq features (more even bodily proportions, a human nose, having five fingers on his left hand, etc.), there does not seem to be any real difference between him and a regular humanoid troll, including their weakness to sunlight.
- Heel–Face Turn: When Usurna reveals Aaarrrgghhh!!! wasn't simply stolen from the Krubera by Gunmar but she gave him to Gunmar as a bargaining chip, the other Krubera realize all they are to her is pawns and turn on her.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Usurna's Evil Gloating about how she is so quick to turn on her own people led to her own people turning on her.
- Love Confession: Claire uses those three words to talk an evasive Jim down.
- The Nose Knows: AAARRRGGHH!!! mistakes Jim's change in Signature Scent for that of a troll and runs into the house in hopes of helping fight it off.
- P.O.V. Cam: The episode starts with a disoriented, newly-transformed Jim stumbling into his own home.
- Power-Upgrading Deformation: Jim thinks so, though he is actually quite good looking even by human standards- just tall, blue with horns and tusks, and missing a finger on his right hand.
- Primal Stance: Jim habitually takes on this stance as a troll.
- Same Character, But Different: Ontop of having a different body, Jim has a scent that AAARRRGGHH!!! did not recognize at first and Claire's staff was unable to find him. He even sometimes goes into a Primal Stance and acts much more aggressive when under severe emotional stress.
- Shout-Out: Jim's troll design, his Primal Stance and his habit of shifting into a more monstrous mindset when angered is similar to that of Beast from X-Men.
- Squee: Aaarrrgghh!!! goes through a spectrum of emotions when confronted with Troll Jim before settling on absolute joy that his good friend is now a troll.
- Stages of Monster Grief: Jim is excited by his new powers at first- playfighting with Aaarrrgghh!!! to test his new strength and a chase through the treetops with Claire to test his speed- until he comes across a stream in the woods, where he gets a good look at himself. He then comes across some boulder-like trolls who recognize him as one of their own even as he tries to explain that he's human. Then, as the sun rises, Jim reaches out and realizes he can't be in sunlight without getting hurt. Later that evening, when he tries to eat dinner with his mother like nothing's changed, he finds he can't eat human food- instead eating a blender and other miscellaneous items. Jim then goes up to his room to try and think, and tries to tear the Amulet off. He starts trashing his room in frustration when he can't, comes across his high school yearbook- and realizes he'll never even graduate high school because of the choice he's made. In his breakdown, Jim runs off to the school to sit at his old desk while remembering his pre-Trollhunter life, sadly carving his name into it, and then gives in to his more animalistic side when Toby and Claire manage to find him, running away while saying that the Jim they knew is gone. The rest of the Trollhunters manage to talk him down on the school's roof and remind him that he's still himself inside, and they'll still be there for him.
- Stock Scream: Usurna gives one before drowning.
- Super-Toughness: One of the perks of Jim's new form is this, being able to a take a punch from AAARRRGGHH!!! that sends him flying through a wooden fence and standing up without a scratch.
- Supporting the Monster Loved One: By the end of the episode, everyone assures Jim that despite how much he has changed, they will all be there for him.
- Took a Level in Badass: Jim was already strong and athletic by human standards - but thanks to becoming half troll, he's on a whole other level.
- 24-Hour Armor: Implied to be the case now for Troll Jim as he attempts to remove his Eclipse Armor only to realize he no longer can.
- Unnecessary Roughness: Jim and AAARRRGGHH!!! devolve into playfully hitting each other and wrestling around.
- Villain Ball: Usurna could not help but dispense some Evil Gloating that revealed to her own people that she is more than willing to sacrifice anyone in her own tribe if it appeals her to Gunmar, leading to her tribe members turning against her and saving AAARRRGGHH!.
