Recap / Trollhunters S2 E7 "Hero with a Thousand Faces"

Go To

Multiple problems plague a frazzled Jim when his amulet goes on the fritz and Claire invites him to meet her parents at a family barbecue.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Artificial Meat: Claire's mother asks her husband to cook up soy hot dogs along with the real ones. While offended, he agrees, deflating as the soy dogs do the same.
  • Call-Back: Jim's helmet from "Skullcrusher" returns, this time for the Daylight armor and worn by Hunter Jim.
  • Continuity Nod: Claire's father mentions all of the damage Jim supposedly did to their house in "Adventures in Trollsitting".
  • Developer's Foresight: Merlin knew that no two troll hunters would be the same, so he designed the amulet to adapt to each wielder, hence why is can grant new powers using magic stones.
  • Discard and Draw: Vendel feels that Jim is ready for the next phase of his training and is thus make to give a test run other magical stones that previous trollhunters have collected in the past.
    • Araknak the Agile wielded a stone that allowed him to stick to walls by the heels of his feet.
    • The Aspectus Stone granted Maddrux the Many to create clones of himself.
  • Energy Absorption: Otto satiates Gunmar's hunger with Vendel's staff, the gums-gums king absorbing all of its magic and turning it into a lifeless clear crystal.
  • Facecam: When Jim sees Love-drunk Jim and the havoc he's causing, Jim has a minor breakdown where the camera stays at a Fish-Eye Lens on his horrified face as he runs around frantically.
  • Hair-Trigger Explosive: Jim's clones are generated when the amulet explodes at random.
  • I DO NOT Want to Know: NotEnrique visits Claire's room, only to find it full of Jim clones. He decides that he'd rather skip this episode.
  • Literal Metaphor: The Aspectus Stone supposedly gave Maddrux the Many the power of a thousand. This is initially interpreted figuratively to grant its wielder super strength, but once it starts cloning Jim Blinky realizes it was likely meant that Maddrux used it to literally fight as 1,000 warriors.
  • Literal Split Personality: Each of the Jim clones are color-coded and each possess a dominant personality trait, usually an emotion that he has at the time.
    • Love-drunk Jim wears a mustard-yellow shirt and is in a perpetually state of wafts euphoria. While he attention mostly goes towards Claire, he'll act like this towards everybody, talking in grand romantic gestures everywhere he goes.
    • Hunter Jim wears a pine-green jacket and is characterized as being the parts of Jim that dedicates himself to his trollhunter duties. He is perpetually serious with a soldier-like attitude, dedicated to keeping the troll-world a secret as trollhunter.
    • Scaredy Jim wears a brown shirt and is afraid of everything.
    • Party Jim wears a red shirt and acts like, well, a total party animal.
    • Sad Jim wears a purple shirt and is perpetually sad, crying at the drop of a hat.
    • Cook Jim wears a grey shirt and represents Jim's capacity as a chef.
    • Spanish Jim wears orange and only speaks in Spanish.
    • Grouch Jim wears black and only speaks in complaints.
  • Parodic Table of the Elements: Vendel claims that mankind's Periodic table is "amusing" and way behind compared to what troll-kind has discovered.
  • Pinned to the Ground: During the fight between Jim and Hunter Jim on the roof of Claire's house, the clone eventually manages to pin Jim to the ground preparing to finish him.
  • Read the Freaking Manual: It is said that the Aspectus Stone granted Maddrux the Many "the strength of a thousand." Unfortunately for Jim, Blinky and Vendel misread that and it actually grants the wielder the ability to make a thousand of him instead.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: NotEnrique takes one look at a room full of Jim clones and declines to get involved.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Spot the Imposter: Claire runs into Jim and Hunter Jim and has to discern which is the real one. She immediately figures it out when Hunter Jim tells her they need to break up while real Jim freaks out.
  • Wham Line:
Claire: I never expected them to like my boyfriend.
  • "YEAH!" Shot: The episode ends with a freeze-frame of Jim celebrating Claire calling him her boyfriend.
