Go To

Señor Uhl sentences Jim and his friends to detention while Queen Usurna gathers evidence of a contract. Draal comes face to face with Gunmar.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Subverted. Barbara thinks Jim stole Señor Uhl's truck out of a need to impress Claire.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: After a brief battle, Gunmar uses his blade to take control of Draal, turning him into a glorified attack dog.
  • Breakfast Club: To go along with the episode's homaged plot, all of the students end up having fun in the barren school after Señor Uhl becomes indisposed in the bathroom.
  • Cosmetically Different Sides: You want to know Arcadia Oaks High's rival school is called? Arcadia Oaks Academy.
  • Couch Gag: Instead of the usual opening, the opening instead parodies The Breakfast Club, showing panning shots of Arcadia Oaks High with the characters of the episode being dropped off at school.
  • Detention Episode: The episode is a parody of The Breakfast Club, and involved the group getting stuck in Saturday detention.
  • Failed a Spot Check:
    • A very minor example. When Señor Uhl returns to class, he does not seem to notice that all of the students are sitting in desks different from where he left them. Justified, since detention did not start for very long when he was incapacitated so he would not remember, and the students were off somewhere else for the whole day.
    • Shortly after the detention begins, Mary already has another phone in her hand while Señor Uhl is still in the room, this one with a distinctive red and white polka-dot case. To be fair, she is much less conspicuous with this phone.
  • Genre Savvy: Mary is shown taking selfies on a caseless phone while Señor Uhl is coming around confiscating them; she puts up a fight for it and glowers at him when he succeeds. Shortly after she has another phone in her hand with a distinctive polka dot case. This time she's more careful about being seen using it and keeps it out of sight.
  • Good-Times Montage: After Señor Uhl becomes incapacitated, the kids decide to use that time to have fun, doing a variety of things throughout the whole school like skating in the halls, using their phones, spying on their teacher's year-books and enjoying lunch.
  • Hufflepuff House: Shannon is the only character present in the episode with no seriously defined character traits outside of being a background character.
  • I Shall Taunt You: During his fight with Gunmar, Draal refers to Jim as the Bular Slayer right to Gunmar's face.
  • Killed Offscreen: Gunmar devours a human woman just before Draal finds him.
  • Lesser of Two Evils: Jim claims that spending an entire Saturday in detention is practically a vacation compared to risking his life every other day.
  • Masochist's Meal: Toby's Diablo Maximus Breakfast Burrito is so volatile, when Señor Uhl eats it, he ends up incapacitated the entire day, alternating between using the bathroom and drowning his tortured tastebuds in milk. Justified, as Toby claims that he has been spending years building up a tolerance to spicy foods.
Toby: That burrito had three ghost peppers in it. Too much spice for his delicate Austrian stomach.
  • Nobody Poops: Hilariously and grossly subverted as the kids check to see where Uhl went and discover he's in men's room, agonizingly ridding himself of Toby's burrito.
Claire: It's like a broken frozen yogurt machine!
Mary: Sounds like lasagna being fired out of a T-shirt cannon!
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Gunmar has Draal spare Jim because he wants to kill him himself.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Señor Uhl confiscates Toby's Diablo Maximus Breakfast Burrito for himself as revenge for the supposed theft of his truck. Toby tries warning him how dangerous it would be to eat it, but Uhl ignores him and eats the whole thing. To say that he regrets it is an understatement.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Stalking Mission: Eli and Steve purposefully gave themselves detention because they thought that Jim, Claire and Toby did the same for a super-secret trollhunting mission.
  • Taking the Heat: Claire, Jim and Toby end up taking the blame for stealing Señor Uhl's truck after stopping the gnomes that did it.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: To The Breakfast Club.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Shannon thinks that everyone is in detention because they are acting out during a stressful time of their lives. With the exception of maybe Mary, everyone else is there under false pretenses. Jim, Claire and Toby were blamed for the theft of Uhl's car by gnomes while Steve and Eli were following them, thinking that they were serving detention as some sort of supernatural mission.
