Tropes found in this story include:

  • Expy: The dead musician who is the crux of the story is clearly one of Prince.
  • Fantastic Racism: Exactly what "The Prince" believed in is left a little ambiguous, but is implied to be a combination of homophobia and anti-intertribal relationships.
  • Feet of Clay: "The Prince" was a brilliant musician and a sincerely nice pony, but he had some very bigoted beliefs.
  • In Love with Love: What Rarity ultimately concludes about herself and her romantic beliefs.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: In the Continuum, news takes a long time to get anywhere due to the lack of communications-oriented magic. The fastest means of spending news in an emergency is to have talented unicorns teleport between cities to inform town criers — and most teleporters have limited range and have only memorized local arrival points. This means that outside a crisis, information typically spreads at the speed of ponies.
