Recap / Transformers G 1 The Core

Go To

Megatron tries to drill his way to the center to the Earth, while the Autobots harass Devastator with mind-controlling dominator disks.

Tropes

  • Bad "Bad Acting": Megatron claims the reason he didn't fill Starscream in on his plan to have Devastator turn on the Autobots was because Starscream was such a rotten actor.
  • Crazy-Prepared: When Starscream warns Megatron that his plan to tap the planet's core could result in the world being destroyed, Megatron isn't too worried, as he has set up a space bridge to Cybertron for the Decepticons to use as an emergency escape. Unfortunately, before the Decepticons can use the bridge, it's destroyed by a berserk Devastator.
  • Earth-Shattering Kaboom: What will happen to the Earth if Megatron's drill penetrates its core.
  • Enemy Mine: It's only when the giant drill goes haywire, Devastator goes berserk and the Space Bridge is destroyed that Megatron agrees to work with the Autobots and free Devastator so he can destroy their drill for good.
  • Foreshadowing: Chip Chase laments on the Autobots not having their own combiner like Devastator but Optimus assures him it will eventually happen. And it does when the Aerialbots get built a few episodes later.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Chip Chase and the Autobots use new dominator disks to take control of Devastator. Megatron, however, uses a device to override the disks. Wheeljack then tries to boost the power on the disks and that fries Devastator's logic circuits and causes him to go on a killing rampage.
  • Heel–Face Brainwashing: The Autobots come up with the idea to use remote disks to turn Devastator (and by extension, the Constructicons) to their side. As underhanded as it sounds, even Optimus Prime thinks this is a good idea.
  • Planetary Core Manipulation: Megatron's plan this time involves building a drill to tap into the Earth's core and obtain geothermal energy, which he claims is the richest source of energy in the galaxy.
  • Protagonist-Centred Morality: Freedom is the right of all sentient beings… except Devastator, apparently.
  • Unreliable Illustrator: While Your Size May Vary was always an issue with the series, this episode demonstrates this the most with Devastator's height ranging from just barely being twice as tall as Megatron, to making the Autobots seem like ants between scenes. Devastator's transformation is also wildly different each time it occurs.
  • You Fool!: Megatron berates Mixmaster and Long Haul for letting themselves be spotted by an Autobot patrol.
