Recap / Transformers G 1 Roll For It

Go To

Megatron returns from Cybertron and seeks a formula to create antimatter. The formula ends up in the possession of Spike's friend Chip, who soon becomes a target for the Decepticons.

Tropes

  • Antimatter: The Decepticons wish to create antimatter to supercharge their energon cubes and use them as weapons against the Autobots. Megatron uses the cubes on himself to become more powerful, but he's forced to eject the antimatter when it threatens to ignite and blow himself up.
  • Art Shift: The animation varies wildly in this episode, per usual for Ashi Productions. There are points where characters are close to their model sheets, others where they're overly detailed, and yet others where the proportions are all over the place.
  • Bilingual Bonus: The antimatter formula Chip reads on his computer is in romanized Japanese. Translating it into English reveals it's actually a dirty in-joke by the Ashi Pro animators, as it's about them suggesting they visit a Turkish bath to pick up chicks.
  • Distressed Dude: Chip is captured by the Decepticons and has his mind read by Soundwave to recover the antimatter formula he destroyed.
  • The Guards Must Be Crazy: Rumble is left in charge of guarding the laboratory the Decepticons have taken Chip too. Hound and Mirage easily distract him by using their abilities of casting holograms and turning invisible respectively, allowing Bumblebee to fly right behind him without catching his attention.
Rumble: There's no one here. I must have static in my rectifiers.
Mirage: Now that's the smartest thing you've said all day!
Rumble: [flattered] R-really? ... Hey, wait! What's going on?!
  • Mind Probe: Soundwave demonstrates the ability to read minds by emitting energy from his hands. He uses this to retrieve the antimatter formula from Chip's mind after he destroyed it to prevent the Decepticons from getting their hands on it.
  • Non-Fatal Explosions: Megatron tosses an antimatter energon cube at the Autobots that causes an explosion that blows up the entire laboratory. The Autobots, while injured and in need of repair, are able to walk away from the blast. By comparison, the Decepticons are completely unharmed despite being near the epicentre of the blast.
  • Plug 'n' Play Technology: Prowl's "battle computer" is damaged during his fight against the Decepticons and he wirelessly links up to Chip's computer to ask for help. Chip is quickly able to use his home computer to control Prowl's actions during the course of the fight.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: Starscream and Soundwave make a break for it after their fight with the Autobots at the power plant goes south. Soundwave ends up holding the Idiot Ball during this by simply running away and getting himself caught in some netting, allowing Bluestreak to catch up and blast him.
  • Shout-Out: Soundwave's running animation as he flees the fight during the opening is heavily inspired by Lupin III.
  • Super Window Jump: Ravage busts into Chip's house this way to kidnap him, and again as they leave.
  • You Are Too Late: Chip tries pulling this on Ravage after tearing up the disk the antimatter formula is on. It doesn't work and he's kidnapped anyway.
