Recap / Total Drama: "Who Can You Trust?"

Go To

The campers are put though a series of trust testing challenges. Geoff loses DJ's pet bunny.

Tropes:

  • Awful Truth: Geoff doesn't want to tell DJ that Bunny got eaten and says that he ran away.
  • Blatant Lies: Duncan trying to justify his Pet the Dog moment to Courtney.
  • Bowdlerise: In the American version, Heather's line, "Ow! Freaking stinging jellyfish!" is replaced with "Nasty stinging jellyfish!"
  • The Bus Came Back: Katie reappears on the Boat of Losers at the end of the episode waiting for Sadie, which manages to cheer her up.
  • Comedic Underwear Exposure: Gwen's purple skull panties get revealed by Heather, after all she's got a doctorate in revenge and humiliation.
  • Cooking Duel: Bridgette and Geoff for the Bass, and Lindsay and Trent for the Gophers, have to carefully prepare fugu blowfish for one of them to eat. Like in the last episode, the Bass win.
  • Cover Innocent Eyes and Ears: Geoff covers Bunny's eyes when Trent starts suffering if not nearly dying from fugu sashimi poisoning.
  • Curse Cut Short: Due to Lindsay's poor instructions, Heather jumps into a pool filled with Electric Jellyfish. As Heather makes her way to the medical tent, she mutters to herself about Lindsay, noting that she "can't believe she trusted that little-," getting shocked by the jellyfish before she can finish her curse. In a case of accidental Last-Second Word Swap, she continues with "nasty stinging jellyfish!"
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Sadie accidentally pelts Courtney with crab apples during the blind reverse William Tell challenge. So Courtney vows Sadie "is going down" and votes her off.
  • Disqualification-Induced Victory: For the second time this season this is how the Gophers won the challenge. DJ removed his blindfold during the final blindfold challenge to see that Bunny (or Duncan's replacement for Bunny anyway) was indeed there.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: During the cliff-climbing challenge, Gwen's skirt gets ripped off by Heather, and DJ is so distracted by staring at her underwear that he lets go of the rope and has a nasty fall.
  • Edible Ammunition: Chris shoots "JapaƱero Pepper Sauce" at Heather and Duncan during the first challenge. It works on Heather, but Duncan just swallows everything Chris shoots at him.
Duncan: Is that the best you can do?
Chris: (to the cameraman) Is that the best we can do?
  • Electric Jellyfish: One challenge is for one camper to jump blindfolded from a platform towards a pool filled with literal electric jellyfish. A teammate is to play acrobat and catch them mid-fall, which scores their team a point. The Killer Bass get through it fine with Harold catching Bridgette, but Lindsay's poor timing means Heather falls right in. She clambers out of the pool with a jellyfish stuck to her that continues to periodically shock her.
  • Everything Makes a Mushroom: Chris spices up the toboggan race with some leftover explosives. Each explosive creates a mushroom upon ignition.
  • Exact Words:
    • Lindsay said she TOOK biology, she said nothing about passing it, though Trent had asked if she had taken biology, not if she passed it.
    • Geoff's excuse that Bunny ran away is used by Duncan to find a new rabbit and pass it off as the original Bunny.
  • False Reassurance: Two examples:
    • Chef says that the injection he's be putting into Trent "won't hurt a bit, it'll hurt a lot".
    • Chris says that, for safety reason, they placed the trapeze over a pond, and then says it's full of jellyfish.
  • Groin Attack: When demonstrating the reverse-William Tell challenge, Chris shoots a crab apple into DJ's nether regions by accident.
Chris: (disappointed in his shot) Aww, nuts.
  • Hope Spot: After eating a glob of the fugu blowfish that Lindsay "prepared", Trent punches himself in the face three times and screams, but seems to be fine. Then, a few seconds later, he turns blue, falls over and starts throwing up.
  • Illness Blanket: After being locked in a freezer the previous episode, Heather starts the day sneezing but wrapped in a cozy blanket.
  • Inevitable Waterfall: Gwen and Leshawna fall down one after being sent flying by a left-over explosive in the final challenge.
  • Kiss of Life: Trent gets poisoned by the fugu sashimi that Lindsay prepared for him. The first aid he receives comes from Chef in a nurse uniform, who, to Trent's horror, moves in to perform CPR.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After Heather humiliated Gwen in the rock climbing challenge, Heather gets a dose of karma after Lindsay fails to catch her during a blindfolded challenge, falling into a pool of jellyfish.
  • Lethal Chef: A very literal example with the blowfish Lindsay serves Trent.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Heather uses the challenge as an opportunity to get revenge on Gwen instead of Lindsay or Leshawna, who locked her in the freezer last episode.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Geoff is pretty guilty over letting Bunny get eaten and cannot tell DJ the truth.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Geoff telling DJ to look and see the new rabbit Duncan got to replace Bunny results in the Bass losing because the challenges were blindfolded.
  • No-Sell: Owen takes the first couple of hits of crab apples by Leshawna surprisingly well, though he does show signs of harm after a short while.
  • Obvious Stunt Double: To introduce the fugu preparation challenge, one of the interns, who neither looks nor is dressed like Chris, somersaults into view and lands behind a stand. The moment he is out of view, Chris rises from behind the stand as if he's the hotshot that made the somersault. Meanwhile, all four contestants take notice of the intern crawling away in the back.
  • Overly Long Gag: During the introduction to blowfish preparation challenge, an intern is doing impressive gymnastics, and then slowly crawls away in the background before Chris describes what the contestants must do.
  • Pants-Pulling Prank: Heather and Gwen are paired up for the rock climbing challenge. Gwen climbs, Heather secures her. While preparing Gwen's harness, Heather adds an extra rope with which she can tear off Gwen's skirt at a time of her choosing, which happens to be when Gwen's about halfway up the cliff and can't do anything to protect her modesty. After initial unease, Gwen decides to tough it out and keep climbing, winning not just by determination but also because her opponent, DJ, lost focus trying to look away.
  • Pet the Dog: Duncan getting the replacement Bunny for DJ. Also Chris for allowing Katie to greet Sadie on the Boat of Losers after she gets voted off.
  • Plot Allergy: Harold opts out of the reverse-William Telling contest, because he's violently allergic to apples.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Duncan gets one for DJ, though only Duncan, Courtney and Geoff are aware of it.
  • Rule of Three: The third challenge, considering that both teams are tied in the overall challenge, has three more challenges in it, and they're all blind challenges.
  • Ship Tease: In addition to Geoff and Bridgette, Courtney is rather impressed with Duncan's act of kindness and, for the first time all season, warms up to him.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Skyward Scream: DJ's pet bunny gets eaten while in Geoff's care. He can't bear to tell DJ, so he lies that Bunny ran off. DJ understands, but is heartbroken that his animal friend would leave him. With tears in his eyes, he drops to his knees, raises his open hands and face, and with a forlorn yet inexplicable echo, he exclaims "Bunny! Why'd you do me like this?!"
  • Sore Loser: When Sadie is eliminated, she angrily calls all of her former teammates "marshmallow-eating freaks" and runs off to the Dock of Shame in tears.
  • Soup Is Medicine: Chef treats Trent's fugu sashimi poisoning with CPR, a shot, and soup.
  • Stock Animal Diet: Duncan uses a carrot as bait to catch DJ a replacement Bunny after his first one got eaten by a snake.
  • Suddenly Speaking: Chef Hatchet speaks for the first time since "Not So Happy Campers - Part 2".
  • Supreme Chef: Bridgette aces her part of the trust challenge by preparing fugu blowfish sushi that doesn't end up sending Geoff to the infirmary.
  • Surprisingly Happy Ending: After Sadie is eliminated and storms off to the Dock of Shame, she instantly cheers up when Katie is shown to be waiting on the Boat of Losers for her.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: DJ's original bunny is eaten by a snake, which is then taken by an eagle, all of which are then eaten by a shark.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Gwen after seeing Heather get hit by Laser-Guided Karma.
Gwen: Sometimes, the universe just gives you a freebee. (looks up to the sky and gives a thumbs up)
    • Also the Gophers finally win a challenge after voting off Beth.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Trent trusts Lindsay to cook fugu blowfish for me - a dish that, if not prepared properly, is extremely poisonous and has no antidote. Somehow, he survives.
  • William Telling: The usual setup is reversed, as the contestants have to shoot crabapples from a slingshot in order to knock arrows off their partner's head whilst blindfolded.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Geoff's reaction to a snake eating DJ's bunny, an eagle snatching said snake, and then said eagle being eaten by a shark.
