Recap / Total Drama: "The Treasure Island of Doctor McLean"

Go To

The campers must rescue Gwen and Sam from a live burial somewhere on the island. Dakota's previous exposure to toxic waste has some... interesting effects on her, and Scott attempts to gain Zoey's trust. Yet again, Scott's manipulations doom his team, sending Dakota home for the last time.

Tropes:

  • Admiring the Abomination: Sam finds the newly-mutated Dakota HOTTER than what she was previously like.
  • As Long as It Sounds Foreign: Manitoba calls Zoey "the ridgy-didge". First off, ridgy-didge is Australian slang that essentially means "truthful", so it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for Manitoba to call Zoey that. Secondly, ridgy-didge is used as an adjective, not a noun.
  • Big Eater: Apparently, Dakota became one while in the infirmary, eating all of the marshmallows that would've been for the elimination ceremony.
  • The Cameo: Gwen.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Mike agrees with Cameron that he can't hide his disorder forever and that he needs to tell Zoey the truth. However, he begs for a little more time, and suggests waiting ten years.
  • Continuity Nod: Gwen mentions being buried alive "again", a throw back to Island's "Phobia Factor".
  • Depending on the Writer: Svetlana acts oddly fed-up in this episode, in contrast to her usual preppy, happy-go-lucky attitude.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Chris and Chef clearly didn't think of the consequences when burying Gwen alive as a practical joke, and force the contestants to go look for both her and Sam.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Dakota reveals that Chris regularly calls his mother.
  • Facepalm: Cameron facepalms over his own stupidity when Scott effortlessly tricks him into revealing that Mike has MPD.
  • Food Coma: Dinner consists of a pasta dish with mutant turkey meat. The mutant meat knocks everyone out cold, which is the intended effect so that the campers can be set adrift on rafts for the challenge the next morning.
  • Freakiness Shame: Seeing Dakota's transformation, Sam remarks that the girl of his dreams just got a thousand times more awesome.
  • Freudian Slip: Mike refers to himself in the plural tense in front of Zoey.
Mike: We're not! I mean...I'm not. (nervously giggles)
  • Gasshole: Sam becomes this after he ate an awful lot of mutant turkey, causing great discomfort to Gwen (since the two of them are trapped in a chest).
  • Giant Squid: Or rather a giant mutated octopus that threatens the contestants.
  • Graceful Loser: Partly due to her mutation, Dakota doesn't seem bothered by the fact that she's being voted off again. Having Sam there probably helps.
  • The Hedge of Thorns: The trail from the swamp to the clearing where Sam and Gwen are to be found is blocked by a thornbush forest. There is no way through it, but Dakotazoid clears a path by clocking a mutant alligator through the bushes.
  • "Hell, Yes!" Moment: Dakota over Sam being back.
  • Hulk Speak: Dakota, after her mutation.
  • Hurt Foot Hop: Mike hits a rock with his foot during a stroll. The frustration of the moment makes Chester come out, who takes it out by kicking the rock a second time. He's left realizing the error of his actions as he hops and holds his foot in pain.
  • Kidnapped While Sleeping: The campers are fed mutant turkey to ensure they stay asleep for a long time. During that time, they are moved to two rafts in Lake Wawanakwa. An alarm clock rings them awake and after the initial shock, Chris and Chef join them to inform them that the first part of the challenge is to make it back to the island.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Mike points out that burying someone alive is dangerous even for Chris.
  • Make-Out Kids: The newly-mutated Dakota and Sam become this at the end of the episode.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": Everyone stares in shock when Dakota's mutation begins to manifest.
  • Mirror Reveal: No one dares say anything when Dakota goes through the first step of her mutation, apart from the fact her hair has started growing back (initially unbeknownst to her now neon green and spiky) and all she notices is that everyone else seems shorter now. Once Chris is done with the challenge instructions, he hands her a pocket mirror. Dakota at first thinks he's trying to scare her with a picture of a scary monster but Scott points out she's holding a mirror. Dakota freaks out upon realizing the scary monster is she herself and threatens bodily harm on Chris, who makes a run for it.
  • Morality Pet: Sam and Zoey become this for the mutating Dakota.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Dakota upon seeing her green hair, as she realizes she’s mutating into a monster.
    • Chris when Dakota threatens to tear him apart for her mutation.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the novels Treasure Island and The Island of Doctor Moreau.
  • Post-Victory Collapse: Lightning fights with mutant alligators while his hands are bound. He wins, but at the cost of losing most of his blood and a tooth. Upon regrouping with Jo, Lightning has just enough strength left to declare his greatness before he collapses, which by sheer coincidence is right next to the stone underneath which the keys are hidden to undo the restraints. The metal detector he was given cues Jo in to take a look.
  • Rewatch Bonus: This episode officially spells out what each of Mike's personality triggers are, but they had all been there from the start. Looking back on the entire rest of the season, you'll realize that the writers were very consistent with only making Mike's alters come out during their trigger.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Singing in the Shower: Mike takes off his shirt for a shower and thus Vito takes over. He goes clubbing under the stream.
  • Split-Personality Switch Trigger: Cameron gives a big rundown on each of Mike's triggers.
  • Spit Take: Chris promotes Chris McLean Instant Coffee during the episode introduction speech. He takes one gulp and can't keep it down, spitting it out violently as he struggles to continue praising it and simultaneously get rid of it.
  • Stop Hitting Yourself: The recently mutated Dakota takes care of a mutant alligator for the Mutant Maggots. Among others, she grabs its tentacles and punches it with them, gleefully asking why it's hitting itself.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Gwen doesn't appear in the episode after being carelessly thrown out of the chest by Dakota, leaving her fate and condition ambiguous. She shows up alive and well next season, though.
  • You Just Told Me: How Scott learns Mike's big secret.
Scott: Mike says he's real grateful you're helping him with his problem.
Cameron: Problem? He told you about his Multiple Personality Disorder?
Scott: Nope, but you just did. [snickers]
