Recap / Total Drama: "Rapa-Phooey!"

Go To

Down to only four contestants, the plane's next destination is Rapa Nui, otherwise known as Easter Island. Alejandro forms a friendship with Cody, and Heather attempts to ally with Sierra. In the end, Sierra is voted out, but Chris decides to make it a reward challenge instead.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – Biology: Chris explains that the female condors are even larger than the males. While this is usually true for birds of prey, both real condor species are rare exceptions, with the males being larger.
  • Big "NO!": Cody does this when it's revealed that Sierra won't be eliminated.
  • Big "YES!": Heather in response to winning the challenge.
  • Bland-Name Product: Alejandro mentions being a part of Cirque du Monet.
  • Brick Joke: The head that the plane accidentally knocks over is later seen trying to be stood up again by Chef and the interns, and then being knocked over after Heather is flung from the Condor nest.
  • The Cameo: Ezekiel is once again seen sneaking around the first class cabin at the start. We also see Mr Coconut popping out of Owen's stone head later in the episode.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: The hats that Chris gives to the contestants are in different colours that match their eggs. Blue for Alejandro, Red for Heather, Purple for Cody, and Green for Sierra.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Sierra's basket-weaving skills once again come into play here, this time she weaves some for her and Heather.
    • We also see the heads of all the previously-eliminated contestants (except Bridgette, Blaineley, and Gwen).
    • Cody's Sweet Tooth first seen in "Broadway Baby" reappears here as Alejandro bribes him.
  • Cub Cues Protective Parent: The contestants have to collect the eggs that have the same color as their hat. Too bad the eggs come from a pair of condors that are very protective parents. In the second part of the challenge, the contestants have to return the eggs in the nest guarded by the mom condor.
  • Crush Blush: Heather blushes when Alejandro points out that she picked him to be alone with in first class. She promptly tucks it away under a veneer of outrage that he'd make more of her choice than mere strategy.
  • Everyone Can See It: Sierra lampshades the now-obvious fact that Heather and Alejandro like each other.
  • Eye Scream: According to Alejandro, this particular type of condor is known for doing this to predators.
Heather: But I like my eyes.
  • Food as Bribe: Alejandro bribes Cody into an alliance through using a lot of candy.
  • Forgot Flanders Could Do That: Subverted. The original aspect of Sierra's uber-fan knowledge of the series returns in this episode, but she uses it as a means to get Cody away from Alejandro and not further herself in the competition like she did at the start of the season.
  • Imprinting: Cody Jr. hatched while Heather was holding the egg, so it keeps trying to rest on her head and nuzzle her. The only ones more irritated about this than Heather are Sierra and the actual mother.
  • Indy Escape: Chris and Chef send boulders down the cavern that the contestants use to get to the next part of the challenge, which proves to be a hinderance to the contestants.
  • Mama Bear: Upon seeing a rather large condor flying about, Cody and Alejandro realize where the eggs came from and proceed to book it. Chris later tasks the contestants with returning the eggs, adding there are more in the nest and that that means the mama condor will react to intruders appropriately.
  • Misplaced Wildlife: Zig-zagged. While condors are not found on Easter Island, the condors in the episode appear to be of a fictional species, rather than either of the extant species of real condor. That said, any condor species living on a small island, especially one without indigenous megafauna for them to scavenge, would be extremely unusual.
  • Monumental Damage: The plane knocks over one of the heads on the island, though it's still intact.
  • Music Soothes the Savage Beast: Chris cues up a song right before the contestants try to return the eggs to the condor's nest. He's rather flippant about whether or not the trope will actually apply. The condor alternates between bopping to the music and knocking contestants out of the nest.
  • Noble Bird of Prey: The Condors that we see in this episode are massive, dangerous, and very protective of their eggs.
  • Person as Verb: When they're up against a female condor that Chris mentions has a 12-foot wingspan, Alejandro can't help but comment that means the wingspan is "two Alejandros wide".
  • Pragmatic Villainy: In the confessional, Heather admits she'd really like to just mock Sierra for her Cody obsession and not have to listen to anymore of this claptrap, but she really needs an ally to counter Alejandro possibly manipulating Cody.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a play on the original name of the location the episode takes at, Rapa Nui.
  • Sanity Slippage: Sierra goes through one when she is separated from Cody.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Stealth Insult: Several, regarding the heads of the eliminated contestants.
    • Lindsay's head is nothing but air.
    • Leshawna's head is massive.
    • Courtney is actually useful to Heather.
    • Owen's head is full of food and belches.
    • Izzy's head is full of bats.
    • Ezekiel's head has an egg hanging out of the nose, looking like a booger.
  • Take That!: When given a catcher's mask as a tool for the next challenge, Alejandro asks if this means they're going to be playing baseball.
    Chris: Thankfully, no.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Heather when Cody Jr. returns to her in full view of the now very angry mama condor.
  • Troll: Chris' reason for not eliminating Sierra.
  • Uncatty Resemblance: One of the condor eggs Sierra collects for the challenge hatches. The chick has a head shaped remarkably like Cody's, prompting Sierra to dub him Cody Jr. and to treat it as their child.
  • Wimp Fight: Chris insists that he gets to fly the Total Drama Jumbo Jet at least once because it's his plane and he wants to. When he reaches for the buttons, Chef answers by slapping at him. Chris slaps back, but he's in over his head and he hurts his pinky.
