Recap / Total Drama: "Picnic at Hanging Dork"

Go To

The next destination for the contestants is the Australian outback. Alejandro and Duncan form a plan to distract Team Amazon from the game, and Courtney and Gwen attempt to get rid of each other. After Team Amazon loses, Courtney and Gwen receive an equal amount of votes, forcing a tiebreaker.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – Animal Care: The tiebreaker challenge has Courtney and Gwen feed a koala a bowl of eucalyptus leaves. In reality, koalas won't eat eucalyptus leaves unless they're attached to the branch, as they don't recognize them as food if they're detached.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Sierra dives off of hanging rock without a bungee rope, Chris calls in medics to sort out the situation… only for the medics to take the injured sheep away instead of Sierra.
  • Big "YES!": Courtney gives one when Gwen is eliminated.
  • Blowing a Raspberry: When Duncan finally manages to get on his emu mount, Cody purposefully runs into him to make him lose his balance, gives a pointedly fake apology, and blows a raspberry at his adversary.
  • Boxing Kangaroo: Duncan has to face off against a wild one when getting to Hanging Rock, though it mostly just kicks him.
  • By the Lights of Their Eyes: Happens to Courtney and Heather when discussing Gwen's possible elimination.
  • Cactus Cushion: The teams have to bungee-jump off a cliff and grab sheep from a flock in search of a branded one. There are some surprises hidden amidst the flock, as Gwen discovers when she grabs hold tightly of a cactus.
  • Crocodile Tears: Duncan and Alejandro cooperate to break down Courtney's defenses. While Alejandro flirts with her, Duncan opens the flood gates to make Courtney believe that he still has feelings for her and thus that flirting back with Alejandro doubles as payback for Duncan's cheating. In a confessional, Duncan explains that fake crying is a trick he learned young and has a lot of experience with to make things go his way.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Alejandro, who's meant to be The Social Expert, had no idea Courtney was trying to throw the challenge to get Gwen eliminated. When he finds out he's pretty impressed.
  • Epic Fail: When Owen first tries to get onto an emu, he fails to jump on one, and then gets sat on by said emu. It also takes him two emus (both of which are struggling) to carry his weight to Hanging Rock.
  • Foreshadowing: Everything Duncan dose to try and throw of Courtney's defences ends up hurting Gwen in some way and he doesn't even notice till the end. He essentially forgets she exists because he's so caught up trying to get Courtney's attention.
  • Glad You Thought of It: Alejandro's already been developing a plan to seduce Courtney to keep her and Heather at odds. The problem is Duncan, whom Alejandro needs to keep oblivious to his tricks. To accomplish this, he manipulates a team strategy discussion so that Duncan proposes exactly what Alejandro was planning to do, leaving Duncan to erroneously think that he's the smarter one between the two of them while also ensuring that he'll lend his assistance to getting to Courtney.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Courtney decides to get Heather in on her plot to get rid of Gwen, Which she admits is a desperate act.
  • "Good Luck" Gesture: Courtney keeps her fingers crossed while Chris works up the tension towards the tie-breaker fifth vote, which can either eliminate Courtney, which she doesn't want, or Gwen, which she does want. The fifth vote ends up going to Sierra, so an extra challenge is required to decide who gets the boot.
  • Five-Man Band Concert: Team Amazon forms a band and sings about... sheeps, specifically, about "Shear the Sheep". Heather, who is surprisingly an Anti-Hero this season, as lead vocals; Courtney, The Lancer, as the guitarist; Cody, the The One Guy, as the bassist; Gwen, the Guile Hero, as the drummer; and Sierra, The Big Girl, as the squealing fangirl. Sierra and Gwen switched positions before the performance, though. Since this season's premise is a musical, this trope was very much expected, especially since everyone has been shown singing from the beginning. However, Courtney is the only one to play her instrument outside of this episode.
  • Horse of a Different Color: The contestants have to use emus to get to Hanging Rock.
  • Impact Silhouette: Sierra leaves one in the ground after forgetting to clip a bungee rope on herself.
  • Land Down Under: The location of Today's episode was in Australia.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: A three way: Duncan throws a dingo at Cody as payback for harassing him out of petty jealousy. However this act gets his new girlfriend, who stole him from her now ex-friend, eliminated.
  • Lethally Stupid: Sierra forgets to clip a bungee rope onto herself when diving off a cliff edge.
  • Lying Finger Cross: Courtney pulls Heather into the unlit bathroom to convince her into an alliance against Gwen. Heather agrees if Courtney won't lose on purpose or vote for her instead. When the deal is made, Heather turns the light on for a confessional, revealing that she's been keeping her fingers crossed. She considers it one of the benefits of the dark.
  • Noodle Incident: Cody apparently fell into a toilet at one point in his life, much to everyone's amusement when it gets revealed.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Duncan throwing the dingo at Cody to delay team Amazon indirectly causes the elimination of his own girlfriend.
  • Operation: Jealousy: As a means of getting back at Alejandro for flirting with Courtney, Heather starts flirting with Duncan.
  • Pet the Dog: Unusually for Heather, she offered Gwen a cookie in the beginning of the episode, before Courtney grabs and crushes it.
  • Plot Allergy: The tie-breaker challenge as to whom will be eliminated between Courtney and Gwen involves feeding koalas eucalyptus leaves without using one's hands. Courtney wins this one because Gwen is allergic to eucalyptus leaves. Not only do they make her sneeze, but as she has no recourse but to use her mouth, her face and in particular her eyes swell up.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the film Picnic at Hanging Rock.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Heather may hate Gwen but she hates losing more, and even refuses to help Courtney get rid of her if she sabotages the team.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Duncan's reaction to his team winning, as he fully expects Gwen to get eliminated. Doubly so since, as noted above, it was his attempt to get back at Cody for trolling him earlier that helped lead to this situation.
  • Raised Lighter Tribute: The sheep during the Team Amazon song.
  • Shout-Out:
    • "Shear the Sheep" shares many similarities with "Back in Black" by AC/DC.
    • The scene where Sierra jumps off the cliff for Cody is a reference to the scene from The Omen, where Damien's nanny jumps off a building for Damien.
  • Spanner in the Works:
    • The landing gear for the plane won't work because a sleeping Ezekiel is blocking the wheels from going down.
    • The vote ends up being a tie because Cody was so dazed from all the spinning that he voted for Sierra by mistake.
  • Split-Screen Reaction: Gwen and Courtney know that either of them will be voted off. As Chris counts the votes, the screen gets diagonally split with the two girls at each side. When Courtney gets a vote, Gwen is happy and Courtney angry. When Gwen gets a vote, Courtney is happy and Gwen concerned. The fifth vote goes to Sierra, which causes a tie and leaves both girls stunned.
  • Tempting Fate: When Owen asks that he doesn't land on his kiwis, he lands on his kiwis.
  • Throat-Slitting Gesture: Team CIRRRRH wins the challenge, much to Courtney's delight because it means her team gets to vote off one of their members that evening and she wants Gwen gone ever since Duncan cheated on her with the goth girl. Duncan picked the winning sheep, so when he realizes the cost and turns to look at Team Amazon, Courtney grins back, points at Gwen, and drags her finger across her throat.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: Heather and Alejandro, once again.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: One of the emus vomits when Alejandro flirts with Courtney.
  • What Does She See in Him?: As always before ahead of a vote, Chris lists the various various ways that team members screwed up. All he can say about Gwen, though, is a mocking "Duncan? Really?"
  • Xanatos Gambit: Duncan concedes that Alejandro's flirting with Courtney can either work, and get Courtney eliminated, or not work, and be a reason to vote off Al.
