Recap / Total Drama: "One Flu Over the Cuckoos"

Go To

With both captains of their respective teams are eliminated, the contestants are challenged to do a medical movie challenge... which quickly goes awry in the second half when all the contestants barring Duncan and Leshawna come down with a fatal disease.

Tropes:

  • Air Quotes: In a confessional, Leshawna explains her lactose intolerance by saying that she and dairy "do not agree", making air quotes as she speaks.
  • Black Speech: Played for Laughs. Izzy starts speaking in tongues (and rolling her eyes 360 degrees) when she thinks she's infected with Mortatisical Crumples Disease.
  • Cram School: Invoked in this episode when Chris gives them heavy textbooks that they'll have to read for tomorrow.
  • Crocodile Tears: The reward for the challenge is that one contestant gets to go on a spa trip. Leshawna breaks into tears over the stress of being on the show, prompting her team to unanimously give her the reward out of sympathy. However, once on her way in the Lame-o-Sine, Leshawna reveals that she played her team for the spa trip. When later they find out about it, Leshawna becomes an outcast.
  • Easily Forgiven: When discussing how Gwen made a deal with the opposing team to throw the previous challenge, Duncan shows no hostility towards his eliminated teammate and just says he didn't know she had it in her in a somewhat impressed tone.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Yes and no. Writing out her will, Heather leaves her mother her most treasured possessions, but she also insists that her siblings get nothing.
  • Gag Lips: As almost every single contestant thinks they're succumbing to a deadly disease, they worsen their own symptoms by imagination or touch. Justin's lips itch, so he scratches until they're red and swollen and no longer in proportion to his face.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Leshawna trying to form an alliance with Duncan and Harold. She could reasonably work with either of them, but trying to get them to work with each other is the desperate part.
  • Hypochondria: What the contestants really have due to reading medical textbooks all night.... along with reactions to things Chef slipped into their food.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Since this is a TV show, Leshawna openly doubts that anyone would let the contestants actually get sick and die. Chris concedes the point, but he also remarks the ratings would be huge.
  • Locked in a Room: Chris locks the contestants in the room after they are "infected".
  • Medical Drama: The genre of this episode is medical movies, and the episode becomes a medical drama in itself with a supposed outbreak of a disease.
  • Pants-Pulling Prank: During the challenge to build a Franken-Chris, Duncan pulls down Harold's pants with the Franken-hand he gets thrown to him by Heather. Leshawna comes to Harold's defense.
  • Plot Allergy: Leshawna is the only contestant not to eat pizza because she's mildly lactose intolerant and her bowels will protest if she eats the cheese-covered snack.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
  • Potty Emergency: Duncan and then DJ, who had to hold his urine while trapped in a plastic bubble.
  • Race Against the Clock: Leshawna is desperate to form an alliance with Duncan and Harold, due to how Heather will inevitably try to get her eliminated.
  • Sequential Symptom Syndrome: As Harold lists the symptoms of "Mortatistical Crumples Disease," all the other contestants demonstrate those very symptoms (Lindsay has explosive diarrhea, Justin has itchy lips, Beth has hot flashes, Heather is nauseous, and Izzy is speaking in tongues). He's relieved that nobody seems to have the final symptom, blindness... then he bumps into Izzy and freaks out that he's gone blind.
  • Shout-Out: The first part of the challenge is to construct a "FrankenChris".
  • Single-Episode Handicap: Harold goes temporarily blind in this episode, which is revealed to be a result of poisoned pizza.
  • Suspicious Video-Game Generosity: Non-Video Game Example. Leshawna suspects somethings up with the cast being given free pizza... a suspicion that turns out to be accurate.
  • Symbolic Blood: On a not-suggestion by Owen, Izzy jumps down on all fours and stuffs her face into a pizza box to eat the contents without using her hands. As her teeth sink viciously into the pizza, splatters of tomato sauce fly around and land on Lindsay and Justin. Lindsay mourns her hair, Justin his pecs, and Owen his pizza.
  • Thermometer Gag: Duncan attempts to put a rectal thermometer in Harold's mouth.
  • Throat-Slitting Gesture: Heather threatens Leshawna and possibly Duncan too by dragging her finger across her throat. She's mad at them for ditching the challenge preparations to get a good night's sleep and has her eye on Leshawna because of her friendship with Gwen.
  • Too Hungry to Be Polite: Izzy gorges on a pizza without using her hands, which Owen is naturally very attracted to.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Leshawna cries over her friends' safety to get the Spa Night, then reveals to her cousin that she was faking it.
