Recap / Total Drama: "Hurl and Go Seek!"

Go To

Chris merges the teams, feeds them expired meat shakes called Juggy Chunks, and then sends them out into the woods for a game of hide and seek with Sugar. Sky brutally rejects Dave, who goes crazy as a result and Shawn tries once again to win back Jasmine.

Tropes:

  • Apology Gift: The challenge is to keep out of Sugar's reach until sunrise. Shawn knows of a cave that makes for a good hiding spot, but instead of using it himself, he offers it to Jasmine to apologize for hurting her earlier in "A Blast From the Past". Jasmine warily refuses the gift because she reasons that if she goes to the cave, Shawn will know where to find her if Sugar catches him and he becomes her helper.
  • Calling Your Attacks:
    Max: Evil vomit!
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with the island malfunctioning and things are about to get much worse.
  • Crush Blush: Shawn reconciles with Jasmine and at the campfire ceremony she tries to kiss him. Always wary of zombies, he yells for her not to bite him, after which she reaches out further to truly kiss him. Shawn's response is "Oh," a smile, and a light blush.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Chef Hatchet may serve disgusting meals to the contestants, but he was genuinely concerned when they ate expired food and suffered from food poisoning.
  • Extreme Omnivore: After Sugar eats her Juggy Chunks, she eats everyone else's as well, since out of the others, only Dave and Sky were able to finish theirs, but it takes the longest to affect her, and only seems to give her a mild stomachache as opposed to the full-blown food poisoning everyone else has been suffering for hours by now.
  • Heroic BSoD: Sky telling Dave off gets him so bad that he votes himself off.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: By Shawn for Jasmine.
  • Oh, Crap!: Scarlett realizing that they have food poisoning.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Chris being nice to the campers, which Sky is smart enough to point out. It turns out that the lawyers told him that he couldn't starve the kids.
  • Nice Day, Deadly Night: The contestants first have to consume food that's been expired since 1978 and the one who first gets through the gross concoction becomes the hunter. They're tasked with finding other contestants in the forest at night and anyone found before sunrise could potentially be eliminated next. While not inherently dangerous, the food predictably makes everyone nauseous and disoriented while out alone in the dark. The thunder storm that rolls in does nothing to improve the challenge's safety.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Part of the reason things between Sky and Dave get so bad is the fact that Dave won't listen to what Sky is trying to tell him.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a play on the phrase "hide and go seek".
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Sky harshly gives one to Dave.
  • Relationship-Salvaging Disaster: Shawn and Jasmine had a solid romance growing until Shawn chose his own safety from perceived zombies over hers and attacked her. Shawn spots Jasmine being chased by a mob of what he thinks are zombies and realizes he can't let history repeat. He jumps into the fray to save her and ultimately sacrifices himself to ensure she survives. In reality, his actions ensure Jasmine has immunity that evening while he loses out on his near-certain immunity. All the same, Jasmine is touched and her and Shawn's romance gets back on track.
  • Sanity Slippage: Dave slowly goes insane thanks to Sky's rejection.
  • Ship Sinking: Dave & Sky.
  • Shoe Slap: Dave's shoe gets thrown around a lot. Firstly, Dave goes mad when Sky definitively rejects him and throws his shoe at her after a long scream of frustration. Because she's already quite a distance away by then, he doesn't hit her but by chance he does hit Max in the back of his head. Angered, Max throws the shoe back in the direction it came from. He does not hit Dave, but he does hit Sugar in the face with it. Sugar is more amused than anything because she believes that flying attack shoes are just a new thing and wants a pair for herself. Dave, who had climbed into a tree, witnesses the hit and calls out for Sugar to return his shoe to him. Because in the current challenge Sugar is the hunter, it's in her interest to get Dave down from the tree. She promises she'll toss the shoe over gently to make him drop his guard and instead throws it hard enough into Dave's face to knock him out of the tree. Not only does Dave make a harsh fall, he gets hit a second time when the shoe drops on his head after bouncing off of him.
  • Shout-Out: Shawn sacrificing himself to save Jasmine by knocking off the "zombies" along with himself is a reference to a scene from Resident Evil: Extinction.
  • Slap Yourself Awake: The contestants have to evade Sugar until sunrise to earn immunity. Shawn has the best chances of all, but tiredness catches up with him in the final hour. He slaps himself twice to stay awake, but then spots Jasmine being chased by what he thinks are zombies. He slaps himself six times and with much more determination, not to stay awake, but to overcome his fear and get to saving Jasmine.
  • Take That!: The scene where Chris says that TV standards would never go low enough for Sugar to get her own show is a direct reference to the fact that Sugar is a parody of TV personality Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson, who stars in Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: YES.
  • When It Rains, It Pours: The contestants are tasked with playing hide and seek in the woods at night after drinking a questionable drink far past its expiration date. Nearly all of them grow weak and delirious from food poisoning and then a storm rolls in.
  • Zombie Apocalypse: Basically the effect of the Juggy Chunks made the contestants look like this.
